I'd like to share a story of my first, but definitly not my last, metal detecting experience.
My family and I spent Fourth of July at a local South Florida beach enjoying our day, watching fighter jets make fly-bys, and otherwise celebrating and enjoying America. In the midst of the excitement while playing catch with a football, i lost my wedding band in waist deep water, about 150yds off the beach. A group of us searched for about 2 hrs. I went home defeated and depressed that we werent able to find it. I did some research on this site and on the hobby in general and resolved that i would find my ring with the help of this great technology.
I found a nearby store that sells and rents metal detectors and manufactures their own line of scoops. Reilly's Treasured Gold in Pompano Beach, FL. Great folks! Joe and i chatted a bit while i learned the ropes and i soon walked out with a (rented) Minelab Excalibur II.
I hit the beach with a positive attitude, beautiful detecting gear, and a handfull of advice. I found my bearings and located and narrowed down the site to a 30x30 foot area between a sand bar and a sea grass bed. I began combing, listening to the machine talking to me. Hit a can, no good. Searched for about 20 min before i got a strong hit. A quick scoop and shake later and down in the beautifully built stainless steel basket was my ring, staring back at me with the same smile i gave it. SUCCESS!!!
So i was able to recover my Platinum diamond studded wedding ring (pictured) to my, and my wife's, content! Well, i figured i'd detect around a bit more and although i didnt find anything else of value except for 40 cents in change, i did leave with a great appreciation of the sport and a new-found hobby that i would love to take up. My girls also enjoyed themselves digging up treasure with daddy!
I just wanted to share my story and say thanks to the great detectorist community out there; everyone seems like a great bunch of folks, from the folks i met at Reilly's and the time i spent here on this forum.
Be well and happy hunting!
