Platinum at the beach?

We are going to South Padre Island and I am planning on metal detecting. Does anyone have any experience with the platinum in sand(wet or dry)?

The dry sand should be fine, and usually will find some deep stuff. In the wet you may need to disc iron and foil to get a stable machine. Reducing the sensitivity may also help if it falses a lot. The machine will not ground grab in the wet sand. It may be best to not GB at all and use the discrimination setting I recommended. I would also try to GB as close as you can to the wet area until you get a very low value. It will not balance below 40, so if you get close, that will be as good as it gets. You will still need to disc out iron and foil. See what works best of the two and give it a try. I've hunted with an F2 and it worked fine using the disc method. If you touch the wet sand it will false, so keep your coil an inch or so above the wet sand. It may also false at the end of your sweep, just when you are going back in the other direction, just ignore those signals. If you have the DD coil, it will work a bit better. It will still get the job done, plus it's fun to experiment. In the dry sand and paths to the beach, it works just like anywhere else, so you'll find plenty of goodies. Hope this helps.

I would definitely use your 1280x. The water and the beach is what it is designed for. I have 2 new detectors and cannot wait to learn them. If I am not familiar with one of my machines I feel myself sometimes trying to take out the machines I am more familiar with. Now I try to take only two detectors on a hunt with me. Only so if one has performance issues, not that this has ever happened, I will have a backup and do not have to end my hunt. I try to force myself to learn a new machine. I do not own a 1280x, but have wanted one for quite a while. I can't justify buying one though. I don't live near many good water hunting areas. Good luck.

The 1280 should be good on the beach, at least you wouldn't have to worry about water damage. I haven't used the 1280, but would assume that a bit of discrimination over the wet sand would help it also. Let us know what you find out when you go. I've been dreaming about a beach trip, but haven't made it this year. It's a seven hour drive for me to the NC coast. I miss that easy sand digging :)
