Placer gold and coils

Was just curious..had buddy from New Hampshire stop.He had little vial of placer gold..which by looking at seemed plenty to get a reading but nothing..tried 4x6 shooter and new 8x6 sef..so Im assuming there has to be a coil just designated for small quantitys of gold such as this..not that Im goona look for gold in Mass....but just wanna let him know my machine doesnt "need to be returned"..just pickin on me he was...but did get me to thinking about what a gold ring will do...just gotta pry one off someones finger to check..well was just curious...Curt

I have two different vials of small amounts of placer gold and my MXT picks them up fine at 4 - 5 inches with the 4X6 coil, sensitivity turned up max and detector booted up in ground lock as this was an air test inside the house and I didn't want the machine trying to track non-existent ground. Most postings I've read concerning prospecting seem to favor either the 4X6 or the 6X10. Hope this is helpful.

Hey BB...Thanks for reply...just couple questions for comparision...amount of placer gold gold he had probaly would fill an empty 22 cal shell casing..and you?..and which mode did you test in?Seems i tried all modes with no results....maybe he had fools gold:shrug::devil:

Hey Curt,
I had the same problem,
met a claim owner, while out drivin around .
saw he had a detector in vehicle, so i stopped and chatted.
He was interested in seeing what my MXT could do compared to an old model he had.
So he pops out a jar, with some fine,, to picker size GOLD.
My detector with 9.5 inch stock coil didnt do a thing,
BUT,, My Garrett, Pro Pinpointer, DID sound off,, when it Made CONTACT with the gold.
It didnt do a thing from an inch out , and it usually does sound a Chatter about 3 inches away from objects
such as Iron.
So,, Im thinkin NEW COIL 4x6, or 6x10 Too.
Then too, I also wonder if somethings WRONG, with my machine.
Then i remember,, the instructions say, that, for prospecting, I would be looking for changes in the VDI
or Grnd Mineralization.
Where theres More Black sand, thats the material Id want to pan, or sluice.
as far as NUGGET hunting, Im still confused as to how good this MXT would be.
Oh well, The learning curve with this machine is ALOT
Ill be watchin this post myself, for more info from others,,,,
Good Luck Hunting

I think it would be the same as detecting for very fine(small) gold chains.
Not to many detector will pick those signals as only one link at a time is ID'd not the whole chain as a whole.
The only time you may get those necklaces is if the detector ID's the charm or latch tied to the chain.
Even rolled up in a ball without the attachments to the chain it likely would not register.
Likely that would apply to flour gold or placer gold in a vile.
Like you said find the black sand and pan it.
Seem to me the Tiger Shark will pick those small chains in the water

You can detect a 1/2 grain picker three inches down in mineralized soil with the MXT. It did better that a ML4500 on very small gold. SAT to hypersat....gain up about 9. Best VLF out there for small gold and is deeper than a GB2 or GMZ because of the lower Freq...... about 14khtz compared to the others that are around 50kHz. The GB2 and GMZ will find smaller gold but will not find that small gold as deep as the MXT. The MXT is a gold magnet and is first a gold machine. It has the same circuitry as the GMT but at a lower freq. For nugget shooting, you need a gold machine with adjustable SAT in mineralized ground where most gold is found.

I wonder how the Scorpian Gold machine would have done?
It's supppose to be a real good gold machine as well.

I just finished working a GPAA gold show a weekend ago in Salem, Oregon and for demonstration purposes I used a little "picker" and a dealer friends little nugget. A "picker" IS a nugget of the smallest size. The one he had was about

Thanks Monte...great info..and i didnt have MXT locked in when i tested and understand somewhat how it reads only one item at a time..Joels message makes sense as did Nancys on one of my last post on silver necklace..my buddy is going to hit up a few brooks/rivers up in NH ...dont think he will find a "picker"..suppose to be just placer gold..but I will try his vial again just for the heck of it in locked position..thanks again for great info...Curt
