Pitch Hold?

Hello

Can someone explain the benefits/features of Pitch Hold? I've read the manual, and don't really see the point of it. Does it just raise the threshold and matches the tone to the threshold.. and if so, what good does that do?

Thanks!!!

DB

The Pitch Hold feature on the Explorer SE is a built-in feature of the Sovereigns and Excals...the threshold will actually take on and hold the tone of the last target encountered, so that the pitch of the threshold elevates and stays there until it takes on the pitch of the next target encountered.

The way this is a help is that if you are one of those folks that uses the threshold the way it's intended to be used...to tip you off to those extra deep targets that might otherwise be missed completely, save for the fact that you LOST your threshold for a second. For example, let's say you are swinging along and you "catch the edge" of a DEEP target, like a worn Seated dime for instance...and your threshold cuts out for a half a second. You might assume that you went over some iron. Maybe you were going a little quick. Maybe your brain isn't as quick in hearing the little "tick" of high tone that was there for an instant but not good enough to may you go "Hmmm..." and you go right by it. But with Pitch Hold, you might notice the pitch of a silver coin as opposed to the pitch of iron and go "Huh...wait a minute!" and go back and have another look. Or another LISTEN, more like it. And lo and behold, at a closer look, from a better angle, you now have a broken but faintly repeatable "high and right" Smartfind or a shaky 00-29 signal at the limit of the depth meter.

That's how it works. Not for every hunter in every situation, but may have it's time and place. Probably NOT the hot ticket for a trashy location but maybe good if you're trying to cover some ground in a field or pasture.

Like Mike says, the pitch hold helps you pick good targets out next to trash, but I caution you, it's a very advanced method of hunting, I can hunt all metal and not have all the tones overwhelm me, took months to accomplish that, twenty minutes of a four hour hunt in all metal, here and there. Sooner or later, the tones sound like a second language to you and you no longer think about them, but now throw in changing the tone of the threshold and it's like confusion to the second power. The fact that you didn't no why the pitch hold existed might be a hint that you are still learning your machine. Keep it simple for now or it will just take longer for you to learn. First you learn your alphabet, then your phonics, then reading, then your writing, and then your thesis. Learn your tones, the specific quality of those tones, your pinpointing, separation of targets and trash, different coils, all metal, then you advance into the realm of pitch hold, long etc. You'll get there and every step of the journey you can go back to the same piece of ground with your advanced skills and pull out more that you missed before that skill existed. It's really cool. If you don't have an eight inch coil yet, consider getting one, it makes learning the SE easier, swinging it easier (lighter), and yet you are still getting close to the stock depth, trash, use the five. Or use the eight and then break out the five.:detecting:

Yes, I agree 100%. Persoanlly, I use the Excal on the beach and have grown accustomed to the threshold taking on the pitch of the last target but could take or leave it. With the SE, I tried it and don't care for it too much. I hunt in AM like you most of the time and am fluent in the "second language" and yes, at first it can be overwhelming. It's sort of like hunting with a threshold machine for the first time...hard to adjust to. After a while you wonder how you ever did without it.

Guys,

This post in response coming from a couple of guys asking about Pitch Hold, "mrlowtones", "detectorbase" and "Mike Virginia beach"
Mike is spot on with his explanation...well done Mike!
I hope the following helps?

PITCH HOLD MODE

Pitch Hold Mode works as follows: after the target signal is heard the Threshold

In fact many Sov's were modified to defeat this feature although I liked it myself...Don't own an SE but from explanations given by SE owners one of those added features that doesn't work for all but many excell with it...sort of just getting used to I would think...
