Pioneer Prospector model BHPRO

Hi I am looking to buy a metal detector for my son for Christmas. Wal-mart currently has the Bounty Hunter Pioneer Prospector model # BHPRO on sale for $69.99. I've searched but can't find any info on that model. Does anyone know anything about it. I've never owned a metal detector before so I have no clue if it is a good one. Any info would be appreciated.

It doesn't look like it. The one at Wal-mart has an coil bottom. Here's the link to it, see what you think.

It is/was my understanding that all BH metal detectors, except for the Jr are made in the USA. The link you provided says that unit is imported. So to tell you the truth, I am at a loss.

Do you think it would be a good buy. I have also looked at the Tracker IV and the VLF model, but really don't understand the difference in all of them. I'm really just looking for something for a beginner. I do want it to be waterproof. We do a lot of camping near creeks and streams so I think my son would probably have it in the water some. Any advice you could offer me would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I'll tell you, I have an Elite 2200 and a Pioneer 505. They are both great machines, however the Elite 2200 is much lighter in weight and therefore easier to swing. The Elite 2200 is newer technology and is an incredible deal at the regular street price of $150. I have seen them for as low as $120 and at that price are a steal. I and other have posted a great deal of info here about the Elite 2200 which is the same as the Discovery 2200 machine. Try searching the archives.

I have no way of knowing if the Prospector is a decent machine. If it is made overseas, I would think twice about it.

Craigs list has some deals on used metal detectors. You might try that.

you might look on eBay for a tracker iv they go for around 80$ that was my first machine its lite weight and very easy to use has good depth found coins at 8 inches when soil cond was right a great starter machine good luck

The Prospector model in the first link looks like a Tracker IV with altered graphics. I think some of the newer models from Bounty Hunter are in fact made in China. They seem to have adopted the armrest from the Teknetics models. To the original poster...don't get that model you saw at Walmart originally, it looks like junk. You might try something a little better such as a Fast Tracker or a Tracker IV. The Fast Tracker is a Tracker IV without the lost-in-space meter on it.
