Hey all.

Live in Garland, Texas outside Dallas. Just received my first MD, today. Purchased a Kit from KellyCo. Excited but I am the Dictionary Picture next to the "Newbie" definition. I did mange to find these forums, and with some research about reference books.

Few thoughts tho, with Kindle, and such, lot of these books can be downloaded to these E-Book devices, cheaper per book. lot of weight one don't have to carry. Your thoughts ? , does one fall, drop, so on that would make it risky?

What other books, should I get. Just like a noob ,,,,, dumb questions

Well thoughts and pointers if ya care to, my gear is posted in my profile

Do lots of research on here and few other forums about this machine. Lots of good info. Read, read , read! Nothing beats good research. Take your time and learn the tones.

Welcome to the most addictive/rewarding sport on the planet!
Yes, read ever thing you can. You have everything you need to start.
I have used the 505 for three years and it will do the job.
The most important steps are spend time using the machine! It may seem all nonsense at first, but practise your technique, learn to probe and pop targets, if in public parks or private yards. If you need to dig plugs, learn to leave no trace you dug there.
The most important thing is to learn all the tones and what they are telling you. A ping/honk is almost always trash, a solid ping/ping is always a good target but a ping/ping with just a bit of a scratch or squawk sound on either end can be junk or jewelry. These things need to become second nature and no book can teach them to you. only time and practise practise practise can do that for you.

The best thing to do is read the manual over a few times and just getting out and using the machine. A book may help give you some pointers, but all machines are different and also soil conditions vary, so it is just a matter of learning the machine. I have had the pioneer 505 and had really good luck with it and would recommend it to anyone for a lower cost machine . My last big find with it was a gold ring . The target id on the 505 I used was actually pretty accurate most of the time for coins, but non of them are totally accurate. I like to listen to the tones. It is also not all that uncommon for detectors to give false tones. If the tone does not repeat itself over the same spot, it is probaly nothing. Turning the sensitivity down helps if you are in a spot that gives you alot of false tones. It wont take you long to figure all this out. When I first started out, I found various items in the house such as coins, jewelry, pop tabs..ect, put them in the back yard, and put the detector to work to get familier with the machine. Good luck.

Hey there KF! I've been using the 505 for a very long time. It was was my 3rd upgrade. I have found just about everything you can imagine with this machine; junk, jewelry, coins, toys, ect. ect....I love this detector, it is easy to learn, light weight, and easy to use. Tom, Ed, and Bucksport are all tellin ya straight, read what ya can, but most importantly, get out and swang that thang! No substitute for experience. BH makes a 4" coil that is fantastic in high traffic areas that have alot of junk. The small coil is addictive because it is deadly accurate, but you do lose some depth with it. These forums are a great way to get info, ask questions, and make new friends. Good luck, happy hunting!
