pioneer 505 not working correctly?

I am new to this all, received a pioneer 505 for Christmas.

I am having trouble with eliminating iron relics.

I have dug a few today that are clearly rusted iron object, but when waved by the detector return randomly across the spectrum. When using disc and the filter nob I can eliminate the few times it actually returns as Iron, but event at max filtering it will return?

Is this correct operation that larger metal object will always show up randomly? or an issue with circular objects? Items appear to be hitching rings or similar?

or an issue with really old impure alloy object? House is colonial era..

There is no getting rid of a LARGE iron object 100% of the time...large objects can ring in anywhere on the display. They just overload the machine most of the time and confuse it...The largest object I have successfully eliminated, was a claw hammer, and that was with the DISC turned to about 11 o'clock and the SENS turned down to 9 o'clock...I was missing nickels at this setting...
9'oclock on DISC is as high as I want to go most times, and 9'oclock on SENS knob is about as low as I want to turn it....
