Would the best way to learn how to pinpoint be to, put a coin etc in the ground mark the spot then play around with it?:help:

An easier way is to throw several coins over target free ground and cover with a blanket or piece of cardboard etc. No digging, you can move and mix the targets easily. Just turn the sensitivity down & raise the coil to avoid overload.

I went to a local dollar store and purchased a package of poker chips .
I glued a coin between two of the same color and marked on one side what it was. I used the red ones for nail, tabs, tinfoil, and aluminum.
I I used the white ones for coins, Penny, nickel, dime, quarter. I also numbered them 1--8 so i do not leave one behind. This way you can find them and with the one side with no marking on them you can practice.
this is a good way to teach kids and others. I keep them in my pouch to shoe others.

I have a couple of my test garden coins X'ed off with some fishing line. When I'm looking for a new coil's pp center I use the X'ed off coins. I have the X off the ground about 2" that makes it plenty easy to slip the coil under. Works good for me.
