Pinpointing with the DD Coil

I tried out the V3 today and dug its first silver, a 1927 Merc, but I had trouble pinpointing in the dirt pile. It is different than the concentric coils I am used to. Where is the "hot spot"? I am guessing it is under the letter "D", but I am not sure.

Any advice?
 
Mine pinpoints between where the rod attaches and the D2 sticker (just in front of the rod).

Since the field of detection is more blade shaped than a concentric coil on shallow targets I find it quickest to pinpoint side to side and then do a quick 90 degree pinpont. I can do the 90 degree thing without moving my feet.

My buddy has an interesting way of pinpointing shallow targets. He finds the center side to side and then slides the coil straight back until the signal disapears and digs right off the front of the loop. This method is in my opinion much harder to learn but more efficient when you get good at it.
 
Here are the results from my V3 test run today. I took it to a site that I have detected before, but I knew there would be more coins, and deep ones at that.

I tried it out in a modified relic program, raising Rx up to 10, and the Disc up to about 90, and the All Metal up to 70. It was pretty stable, but the Tx Boost made it unstable so I left it off.

I found a bunch of Wheats dating from 1917 to the 1940's, some buttons including a WWI (?) "ARMY" button, and a Merc at about 7 inches, which read like a penny. I found the VDI to be a bit more accurate on the DFX, but I still have a lot to learn on the V3, so maybe I can make some more adjustments. Any advice is helpful!

Like I said earlier, I had a bit of trouble pinpointing with the DD coil, and my battery was low on my pinpointing device, making it even more of a challenge. Thanks for your help with the "hot spot"!

All in all I love this machine!!!

I'm not sure it will make a huge difference but try running correlate rather than best data.
 
If the target is fairly shallow I can pick it up right at the tip of the coil and also all along the coil but any deeper and it's always in the center where the shaft attaches.
 
On the coil under the "D" and again in the same spot at the rear portion of the coil. It's a bit difficult to remember there is also a spot at the rear of the coil....but if yuo located a target, slide back and insure you are using the front pin pointer you will be tossing coins in your pocket in no time.
