Hello Woodchuck,
Nice to hear from you. First are you trying to P.P. in the disc. mode or the all metal smart track mode. To P.P with the time ranger you need to press all metal smart track to acuratly P.P. Once you have located your target and you know about where its hiding.(using the disc mode.) You press the all metal smart track pad then swing your coil back over the target ,,as the center ring of the coil gets closer to the target the all metal hum willl get louder ,now as you move the coil and it gets further from the target the all metal hum will decrease ,now move the coil back in the opposite direction until the hum increases again. Do this side to side and forward and backward until the hum is loud or strong as it will get under the center ring of the coil and your target will be right there .If this method does not work you may have a bad coil ,Also if the hum is to loud or strong you can move your coil off to the side of the suspected target and press all metal smart track again until the hum becomes more focused the target should allways be under the center ring of the coil as this is the receiver coil and the outer ring is the transmitter coil ,Of course i am assuming that your Time Ranger was suplied with the 8 in. spider coil and not the 7.5 in.solid coil . I agree that a test garden is a good way to go. I have one and I use golf tees to mark where the coins are so I can get a good visual picture of where the coin actually is in relation to where my P.P (all metal smart track mode) says it is. The Time Ranger is a very good pinpointer once you have learned this function As you get to learn your machine you will see the T.R. will do things that other detectors cant do esspecially once you learn how to manually program your T.R. using the disc target touchpad in conjunction with your target accept (+) and target reject(-) touch pads, but thats another story.
I hope this helps. Happy Huntin !
