Pinpointing techniques.

Went out for the first time with my EXP to an old park in town that doesn't give up much. But there is a lot of junk there and so I know there has to be goodies underneath it. I hit some targets that sounded and looked good but a lot of the time when I went to dig, I either didn't find the target or my pinpointing was off.
What are the pinpointing techniques some of you use with the DD coil? What about when you've dug a plug and pulled out some soil? I've heard and read a few already. Everyone seems to have their fave technique and the most common I hear is the spot under the Minelab logo (on 10" coil) or in front of the center of the coil. I'm so use to concentric coil pinpointing and this DD coil seems a lot harder to me. Pinpointing with the DD and getting used to the non numerical depth meter are probably gonna be the two hardest things for me to get use to!
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

btw - didn't find any coins just some odds and ends. I did leave two "silver" signals cause I wasn't sure on pinpointing and didn't want to make a mess in the park chasin' a bad pinpoint signal.

Elmer,
Everybody seems to have a different way to pinpoint and you have to find one that works the best for you. Once I get a signal that sounds good I will try it from a differnt angle and if it still sounds good I will lift the coil and go to piinpoint on the detector and lower the coil to the target and swing it back and forth to narrow it down, then with the smaller swing of the coil over the target I will bring the coil back to me untill I lose the signal. At this time you know you should have the target centered by going back and forth as you were just over the signal. Now I will push the coil forward without going side to side untill I get the signal and bring it back untill it is gone, forward again and back. By this time you should see where the target is on the tip of the coil as when you get it and when you dont. Now visualize that spot and come at this area from a differnt direction and see if it is not at that same spot you got it before with the tip of the coil. That spot is where you will find your target, been off no more than a inch one way or another. Now if it was deep just dig out a plug, but if it was a loud one and surface you can just probe it.
I highy recomend the X1 probe as for surface targets after you do the pinpoint you can use the probe to find the target. I also recomend it if you have to dig a plug as you go right into the hole and find the target right away as you should be close if you pinpointed right.
Now for pinpointing with the stock coil and the target is close to the top of the ground you may get the signal in 3 differnt places so you will want to lift the coil up a bit so it wont be picked up on the edges of the coil.
Good luck
Rick

I pull the detector (coil) towards me until the beep stops, then push forward to just where it starts, then the coin should be under the front of the Minelab label. I hold my thumb over that spot to mark it as I move the coil out of the way. HH, George (MN)

But you still have ta be able to pinpoint with the detector to get a approximate location don't you ????

yeah, I was just busting him a bit for his comment below about not needing a probe.. I usually pinpoint by the lifting away of the coil to the right about 6 inches above and away from where I hear it in disc hot pinpoint then bring it back over the target, I might repeat it a couple times to be sure, then do the 90 degree thing.. on a good target I am pretty close most times.. its the junk targets that I have trouble with mostly, if the target is less than 3 inches oon the meter I just probe the top of the ground.. no need for pinpoint.

Buy the damn probe already! Just kidding. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/tongue.gif" BORDER=0 ALT,":p">
I use the little raised dot in the center of my coil for my pinpoint location. Make sure you move the coil off to the side before hitting the button(I know, duh) then go over the target, then turn your whole body and do it again. After you get it down, you don't have to turn your whole body, just the coil, but I think it helps at first.
Before all of that, circle the target even if you know it is good to narrow down the location before you hit pinpoint. Then get your x. Then go over the target again in detect mode to make sure the signal didn't move(Good indication of a nail), then pinpoint it again. I may do this three or four times or more to make sure I have it in the right spot. It sounds like a long ordeal, but trust me, when you have it down, it is very quick. We were hunting with boob yesterday and after a while I was sick of this one spot so I sat in the car and listened to some tunes on the radio. You know good stuff, the new Korn, System of a Down, Disturbed, etc. Anydamnway, I timed boob one of his holes. This will sound like a bunch of B.S., but I swear it is true. The hole I timed him was one of the quickest I saw him dig the whole day, it took him 17 minutes!!! There was one hole while I was still detecting that took him every bit of 45 minutes! This one park we stopped at, he started digging a target about 2 foot from the truck, I hunted around the entire park and dug a couple 8" clad quarters and a 7-8" clad dime and walked back to put up my gear and he was still digging the same target. I had Ken distract him when we went to another place and put my 8" coil on his detector to see if he would even notice. He did, but he used it the rest of the day and I left it with him so maybe it will help him learn to pinpoint better. Oh, BTW, he has no X-1!
I digress, some times a deeper target will be surrounded by trash. You have to kind of snake the hot strip between all the crap to get a pinpoint. You may have a V pinpoint or a weird x, but it can be done, just take your time.

...I may invest in an X1 in the near future. What the hell. I got the 8" coil I wanted and another lower stem for it...now working on getting a carry bag...might as well cough up the change (haha) for an X1. But it will be a bit later probably. Besides, there seems to be a long wait list for 'em anyway.
Thanks for the tips! "X"ing with the 8" is easy. Now to learn to do it with the stock!

(P.S. - Nice choice of music btw. I listen to some of that stuff too. )
