Pinpointing mode and DD coils....

ok, I've got cabin fever, am snowbound and lazy. I got a new xt70 after Christmas and haven't been outside with it at all. Just to cold and the ground is frozen solid.
I've only had detectors with concentric coils before but now I'm wondering about the best way to pinpoint an xt70 when using a DD coil?? How does it respond when going to pinpoint mode?? Or do you just get a signal and do the wiggle while sliding the coil forward or back until the signal drops off and it's at the front or rearside of the coil? Thanks in advance and come on spring!! Bob.

I use the second process. I never use the pinpoint function. It's much easier to make very slow, short sweeps while working the coil back towards you. As soon as you no longer hear the signal, the object will be directly in front of the middle of your coil.

I generally do a shallow X and slide the tip back. If you imagine the DD as having a line down the center, where the 2 intersect is where the target is. When you can just pick up the signal while doing this is the sweet spot. How close the X is to the center of the coil gives a fair indication of relative depth. When practiced for a bit, this method is considerably faster than when using the pinpointing mode. ...Willy.
