Jim,
Sound simler to what I do too.
I found from experience In disc I will get a good signal or sound like a good signal and to make sure it is I will move the loop back to me and use the tip of the coil for pinpointing. While swinging back and forth and bringing the loop back towards me I will lose the signal and when going forward with the coil untill I hear it, I now know it will be under my decal on the loop, now I will visualize that spot and turn 90 degrees and do this again and if I dont get a signal I may move the loop again and if I still dont I know it was junk, and if the signal moves quite a bit I too know it is junk. If the signal is still there and within a inch or 2 I will dig right where the decal on the loop is. To be sure ,I will know now where the signal is and it is a good one so when I go to pinpoint and do this same thing and be right on with pinpointing. Now if it is real junk infested you many not beable to go to pinpoint as with all the junk you wont beable to pinpoint, but if done right in Disc you will be very close on pinpointing.
I used to dig a lot of rusty nails before I went and tried 2 to 4 differnt ways on a target and found out if it moves or you only get the signal one way and turn and do not is is junk. If you get a good repeatable high pitched signal from more than one way and in the same spot chance are it is a good target.
Good Luck with your Explorer
Rick
