Pinpointing HELP!!

Ok...I give up! My reputation is shot! Children run screaming when they see me coming and I am banned from all grassy areas in the state! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">Seriously... For some reason I can't seem to get the hang of pinpointing this darned explorer! Let me start by saying that this is NOT my first detector. My other machine pinpoints perfectly! I can usually place a coin probe on top of the target (or at least withih 1/2 an inch of it). With the explorer...the only way I feel confident that I can find the target is to dig a 10 1/2 inch diameter hole! (not really, but I am sure you get the idea) I have tried EVERYTHING!!! And I do mean everything that is listed in the book...I can not get a feel for the target. HELP!!

I have read this info before and that really isn't the problem that I am having. I am having difficulty determining where the target is located on the coil. My signals are good. Now I know that you are supposed to use the center of the coil but that never seems to work for me. The tone is either consistent (in detect mode) or steady (in pinpoint mode) but the target is never in the same place. I either have a tone or I don't. Since the coil is 10 1/2" in diameter...even using the center strip is still a large area to try to probe a coin. Even using the "X" technique doesn't work. I must be "pinpointing impaired"!

Use the dot on the top of the coil for the center of the pinpoint.also if you have a good large pinpoint and can't quite get it down to a small area, like if it is a shallow or large target, try lifting the coil off of the ground till you get it narrowed to a very small area, sometimes you might have the coil 6 inches or more off of the ground.make your x using the dot on the coil as center.
Also the toe of the coil, front center,is hot and will reach as deep.some pinpoint lifting the back of the coil approximately 45 degrees where just the front of the coil is detecting the target.then do your x pattern.
I really spend alot of time pinpointing till I am certain where the target is.Most of the time I could hit it first try with a probe, not all the time but most of the time. Also if it seems to be pinpointing in a different area than where you are getting your signal it usually is a nail.
Most people do dig plugs as large as the coil, easier to replace when done and easier on you if your pinpoint is off a little.I believe the grass has a better chance of staying alive with a bigger plug.

what audio mode and recovery mode you using? if your not using it alrady try fast and normal audio, it will help in the disc mode at least.. try lifting the coil off the ground 6 inches for shallow targets.. in high trash use the disc mode only.. you can also try using the toe ofthe coil method.. get the signal lift the coil till you know its under the center, then slowy work the coil back towards you till the signal disappears.. the target should be offthe tip of the coil,, on deep ones you shouldnt have any problem getting the signal in the center only..

If you haven't seen the video demo on pinpointing that is on my 'Explorer Charts and A/V files' page then you might want to check it out.
The coil is sweeping 10"s above the dime, but as you can see in the video it is pinpointing with no problem. Believe it or not I did this demo blindfolded so I would not see the dime which might inadvertently have guided my pinpoint over the dime. Watch the speed of the sweep.
The video shows the side to side/ forward and backward method, I find this method as acurate as the 90 degree method but without have to turn 90 degrees. You need RealPlayer.

Here's the link, the video's are on near the bottom of the page............

Hey SJ. If the signal is really strong, try lifting the coil off the ground a little then try pinpointing in "detect" mode. If a coin or whatever is close to the surface, the outer ring of the coil will cause the detecter to sound off also making it sound like you have more than one target or making it seem like the target is never in the same place. Try pinpointing coins by just taking a dime or penny and doing it on the surface of the ground so you know what the detector is doing when it sees these objects underground. Good luck.

I know what you mean about other detectors. One thing I really miss is the variable tone pinpointing I had...it would get higher in pitch as you got closer to the target and lower as you moved away. Anyway,I put a black dot with magic marker right in the center of the 10.5" coil with and in pinpoint mode it's there every time. It's still hard to find coins though, because of the way they blend with the dirt so I bought a hand held probe and it really helps to save time. -Dave

Ahhhh...Variable tone pinpointing (VCO) you've gotta love it! The things we sacrifice for depth!
Thanks for the tips, I will give them a try.
