Pinpointing Depth

I have a question on pinpointing depth as I await the manual and dvd. Being somewhat familiar with the DFX and other White's machines, the depth readings were always numeric and pretty close. I am having a little trouble with reading depth with the 70. Do the arrows on the side work in all modes such as all metal. Thanks

First and foremost put your Whites in the closet and don't switch back and forth lest you become confused. When you watch the video and read the manual should be quite easy to adopt to a new system. Basically when you press the pinpoint button it activates the arrows and gives you a visual and audio way of pinpointing which is quite simple..As the other fellow said each arrow is approx 2 inches from the target to the coil so think of the arrows as 2-4-6-8-10..and you should be good to go. Very accurate way of pinpointing and after several trips in the field should have no problems..I have learned from experience you must have both the unit and instructions in hand to fully grasp the concept...

Pinpoint works in Pattern and all metal. If you are in a discrimination Pattern, the discrimination is disengaged when the Pinpoint button is pressed. Pinpoint mode gives a continuous audio response that is both volume and tone modulated. As you center over the target, the tone and volume increase.

If you haven't found them, the video can be viewed at the bottom of the FAQFAQ section above. As well, the X-Terra manuals are available for viewing at the Minelab website. http://www.minelab.com/consumer/page.php?section=272&id=4&pId=8&pNm=X-Terra%2070

Thanks everyone. I have decided to put the DFX up (I dont understand it anyway) so I can devote all my time to learning the X70. I figured out that the pinpoint mode is very accurate for me just didnt quite understand the depth part. Another thing, could someone explain the two round circles while Im pinpointing? Sorry for all the questions.

As you would turn the dial to tune in a radio station, a circle with split halves would begin to close together as you tuned to the center frequency of the radio station you wanted to listen to. The pinpoint halves act as a split signal strength meter, coming together and joining as you center over the target. Throw some targets on clean ground and practice for ten minutes, you'll get it right off.

Once you have that down, look at the pinpoint display again and you will see that on the X70 only, it will provide a target ID number if you move the coil back & forth over the target. How much you have to move it for reliable ID has been the subject of some debate around here in the past. So you give it a go and form your own opinion, now if you agree with my position you're a great guy, otherwise you're a bum.

Go to Digger's post and you can peruse the manual which should answer all your questions..I feel you are reverting back to the DFX which you found difficult to understand which I understand as reading that DFX manual can be mindboggling.. the X-70
is user friendly and your learning period should be short at best relative its operation....

Thanks for the help. I went out today and practiced a bit. I will post some pics in a new thread. Again, thanks.

I have noticed at time that the depth meter can be way off? I have found coins sitting on top of the ground showing 6"? What causes this, Beale.

Went out last Tuesday ,probably for the last time this year because it's starting to get cold here in Michigan. Anyway found afew clad coins and i noticed
a couple time i got depth readings that were way off some coins were just under the surface ,but i got depth readings of eight to ten inches.
I've been coin shooting with my x-Terra 70 equipped with 6' 18.75MHz coil...Let Me tell ya i can't wait for spring to roll around . i guess I'll spend the winter months doing research, and looking for new places to hunt.good luck and happy hunting to those with mild winter weather and can swing their coils year round.

This is applicable to many different units especially if you pinpoint a little off center or perhaps have ground balance set incorretly.
I really feel the shallow coin overloads the circuit and if you lift the coil several inches off the ground or detune you get a more accurate pinpoint.. Don't happen that often with any unit to bother me but if you have really bad ground might try to manually ground balance which is explained in the manual and video.

I have an Explorer SE and it is no better on depth, sometimes it shows the target at 6-9" and it is right under the coil , and sometimes it shows it under the coil and it is 6-9" down, I just ignore it:wacko:
