Pinpointers...

I'm thinking of investing in one. They can be had from about $79 to $200+ for the Sunray. There is one selling at Kellyco for $99 that's solid and can be stuck in to the soil, flap whatever and it vibrates to signal success. That seems to make sense to me. It can be carried out of the way, you don't have to remove the phones to 'hear' it, its durable enough to be poked into the earth, waterproof, etc.
Ever use one of those? What can you recommend?
Thanks and HH to all.

Steve, I think you are describing a Vibra-Probe. I use one and don't know how I ever found anything without it before. The only things I would like to see on it are longer range (thats why I've ordered a Sunray probe) and a little light on it so I would know it is on. A few times it has turned itself off while I am searching the hole and when it vibrates to do this I am thinking it found the target. Then I am looking in the hole with the probe turned off and don't know it. Still, I wouldn't hunt without a probe after having used one and the Vibra-probe looks more rugged than the other probes to me.

No matter what all the bashers say we have one thing that blows the competition away,an X-1.
No other company has it,makes us stand out,not to mention it goes deeper than any probe made, can be heard through the headphones, uses the same settings as your detector so if you go for an iffy signal when you dig your plug, you can tell if the signal changes when you check the hole, you won't forget to buy the separate batteries. With the rechargeable batteries you would probably make the difference up in battery costs.
I don't even have one yet!Do you think I might want one?

I'm hearing you loud and clear Ric. I believe the X1 is probably the 'smart' play and the best design for the Explorer for all the reasons you noted. The only down side for me is the price. Right now, I hunt with the XS probably 2 hours a week and generally do pretty well with it. I'm trying to hook up on Tinytec right now that vibrates/buzzes, with the light, H20 proof etc. If I use it a lot and can really justify dropping $200 on an X1 then I'll do so. Heck, that same $200 will almost pay for a new carb for my #1 toy in the world at the moment, a 350HP '70 Corvette Coupe in sweet shape. ;-)) Lest you think I'm a real jerk, the only reason I mention that is that my better half for the past 21 years has been extremely understanding of my often expensive hobbies and I'm trying to keep myself under some control. (Dang that sounds weak, but it's the truth!)

cool, you have metal bumbers.I missed a hell of a deal on a cherry 69(the year I was born)factory big block and 4 speed for $5000,man I hate being poor.
Double that and get a holley or a Barry Grant.I have 2 brand new Eldlebrocks on my tunnel ram but wish they were holleys.
Anyway,I cannot afford an X-1 or I would have one,If I buy a cheaper probe I would just regret it and wish I had the X1 so now I suffer.Every target I dig I think to myself "man I wish I had the X-1".
Anyway,it sounds like you are like me and like toys,I bet you end up with an X-1 eventually.

Hi, Steve!
I love pinpointers: always have. Built my first one following an article in W&ET about a billion years ago. I've owned a number since then. My favorite is the Periscope: it's expensive, but I've been wanting an intelligent probe since the first time I tried to retrieve a target from ground that had a bunch of gravel mixed in it. I can't imagine hunting without the 'scope now.
If the Periscope is too rich for your blood , definitely check out the Vibraprobe. It' built like the proverbial little brick house, and does an excellent job. It does not penetrate the ground like the Periscope, but then none of the others do...
I haven't used the Sunray X-1, but I know that Ralph builds killer products (I love his SuperCharger) and I imagine the X-1 is of the same quality. It's kinda mid-priced between the Vibraprobe and the Periscope.
Hope this helps some! If you want to read about some other probes, check out my website (below). In the Treasure hunting section, under the Gopher Tales link, is a review of a number of different probes. I also have a field test on the Periscope there...

Wow! I'd kill for a factory big block. At that kind of price, the rest of the car would not need to be in cherry condition. I looked at a '69 427/435hp the other day...$34,000. WAY out of my wildest price range, but ohhhhhh what a car! Keep me in my mind if you ever see that kind of deal again. You'd be in line for a serious finders fee!
You're probably right too. One of these days I'll just have to have an X1 and I'll go ahead and spend the dough.
Thanks for the post. GL HH

Well I got you all beat on the corvettes 67 coupe 327 300 horses with factory air only one problem just sold it a couple months ago due to health problems when I resigned from my job oh well feel lucky some people go through life never owning one. This was my fourth one had a 65, 81, 94 and the 67 as far as real power to the pavement the 94 was hard to beat then again the handling went along with that. Anyway back to probes I sure would like to have the x-1 maybe when my retirement comes through I can get it then cause I do got the time now and I am no old man...42 well not to old for you cheapies like me right now that can't afford the x-1 there is a web sight at:
http://tthn.com/resources/do-it-yourself/probe/
wonder if anyone else has tried making one of these??? There is also a company named lyons that is selling something similar to them on ebay that look home made so has anyone tried one of these pinpointers...later fellows...BiLL/WV

375 horse 440 magnum, but I would rather have the 67 Vette.I am sure your vette was in better shape, though.I have a Porsche 944 for handling.Still want a 67 vette, chevelle, goat,or camaro.I have to find a stash of $20.00 gold pieces first.
To get back on topic, got my money order for a probe today, have bills that need paid but screw it.

Yes you do. I see that R/T. Very Nice!
I would still give you a big run for the money on a curvy road where my very tight low slung beast will beg for more!
:)
Take care.

HH, GL with the X1. Let us know how it goes.
