Pinpointers

Hiya guys,
I Have been hunting for years, but never used a pinpointed until recently ... I'M HOOKED! I want one!
I WANT THE BEST ONE. Who makes it?

well I don't know about the best one , but I use a Garret pro pointer and It works good. They make a waterproof one that is probably better too.

Beeperboy, I've got the Garrett pro pin pointer and that thing is as tough as nails. I started out with one from harbour freight that my little brother gave me and it actually did OK but after hooking up with this Garrett which cost me 125$ I could tell a big difference. Everybody that metal hunts needs a pin pointer, they make the hunt so much more enjoyable.

When my brother in law turned me on to metal detecting one of his pieces of advice was get your self a pin pointer. So I went with the Garrett pro pointer. After over a years of hard use I did have to send it back to Garrett. They repaired it and even paid to have it shipped back to me.

I picked up a second pro pointer in a deal I made when I bought a detector for guests and children.

For my Birthday this year my wife bought me the new Garrett AT pro pointer. I really like having the three different sensitivity settings and the fact that it is water proof.

I would not want to try to detect without a pin pointer. I even carry the AT to the beach in order to find those small targets that fall thru the holes in my scoop.

Garrett Pro Pointer with the Whites Bullseye as a backup, the best one that i have is the inline DX-1 probe on the DFX but alas that is a dedicated probe for that machine and wont work on other machine apart from the MXT as its tethered to the machine, also have a Uniprobe but for some reason dont use that one much.

All of the aforementioned are very good depending on what you are looking for. I loved the SunRay inline but I wanted to lighten the load some and went to the handhealds. The Garrett is my backup to the White's TRX.

The Harbor Freight pointer works and does a good for the price. I used it for several years and it has adjustable sensitivity. Definitely better than going detecting without a pin pointer.
I finally bought the AT Garrett carrot in March and it has made my hunting easier. I have it in the supplied holster I can be searching for a target faster than I could get the HF ready to search. That time savings and ease of use doesn't sound like much but it did make my hunts better. The vibration and tone is handy for finding targets. I can use in the vibration only mode for stealth and it is nice for my hearing and the sometimes windy hunting conditions where those little beepers are not loud enough. It is very sturdy and can be used to scrape in the dirt helping me to find my target. If you buy the carrot it will have a supplied 9volt battery installed. Water proof to ten feet depth is a plus. I will say the supplied battery will be OK to check it functions as soon as it is UN boxed. Do yourself a favor and replace it with a new alkaline before you go hunting.

Some pinpointers detect from only their tip, while others detect the whole length of the arm.

You may want to decide that, and whether you need it to be waterproof, then decide on the make/model.

I detected for about a year without one, my cousin told me he wouldn't go without one. I thought, "I'm doing OK without one, besides I don't have the money for one", So, after about a year I broke down and bought a Garrett Pro Pinpointer. OH, MY, I love that thing! "I wouldn't go without one" Only problem was the cap didn't hold the battery tight enough to make contact all the time. So I put a single piece of thin stock cardboard, like a cereal box, in the cap! No more problems! I've abused it, scraped the sides of holes with it, gouged it into the ground trying to find my targets, etc. LOVE IT. Then they had to come out with the new Garrett AT pro pointer, waterproof! I too, got one from my wife for my birthday present a month ago, it's even better! One touch can narrow down your large target into several small targets in a pocket spill/ bullet spill! Now when my grandson of 6 goes out with me he can use my old one! He is soooo excited! Can't wait to take him out, he now has his own metal detector, from Harbor Freight, and his own Fiscar's Garden digger, and now a pinpointer! What addiction have I started in this 6 year old!!!

The little felt pad inside the screw on bottom that holds the battery down firmly with the Garrett PPs has a tendency to flatten out over time and you lose a good battery connection.

You can use a little piece of cardboard or something similar to hold the battery in place.

A more permanent fix is to buy a pack of the little self-sticking felt pads for a couple bucks at the big box and replace the flattened out one.

I've had the Garrett PP for a long time now and the only 2 issues I've had are falsing and the tiny internal switch coming apart. The falsing is irritating and the only way to stop it is to switch it off and then on again. If you can place it on or in a target free area and switch off and then on, it seems to last longer (from falsing). If you happen to drop it on a hard surface like a parking lot blacktop or definitely a concrete surface (like I accidentally did) the switch will most likely come apart and will not function anymore. You can get replacement switch's off Ebay (2 or more in a pack in case you mess up one of them) and replace the switch which I did that needs to be soldered to the board. It's a delicate job and you can easily ruin the circuit board if your soldering iron wanders!! but it'll be good as new if you can do it. Make sure you have it tethered to your pouch/waist to lessen the chance of dropping it.
I have also had to put padding in the end cap to get the battery to make good contact. Other than those 2 issues, it's a must have for me for metal detectingl!!

My experience with the Garrett PPs is that they are more prone to having falsing problems when you get aggressive with them.

I didn't realize that when I had my first one and I was jamming it hard to the ground whenever I couldn't find a target and it started having falsing issues in fairly short order.

Pushing the PP into the ground instead of just placing it apparently damages the small wires in the shaft by causing them to distort.

Whites TRX and Sunray inlines.

They are the best.

You have done something that is getting a youngster outdoors getting some exercise instead of sitting indoors playing with their electronics. Good Job.

I think that at a certain price point, they are probably all comparable in quality. The Makro I have now has been my first pointer and I never thought of even trying anything else. It's submersible, has a led light and it can be put in vibration mode only (something I couldn't live without).
