pinpointer's

gear box

New member
I have to confess, I have a pinpointer but never use it.But after everything I have been reading about the GT and the depth it get's, I think it might be a good thing. Is there a big advantage of, say a sunray probe verses a hand held one? I'm not sure I want to attach something to the shaft, except maybe a meter. Thank's and have a nice Thanksgiving.

The main advantage of the S1 probe is that it functions as a small coil for the detector that you can poke right down into a hole and identify the target through the Sov's ID system.
Other advantages are that it works deeper than most other probes, and it can't get lost or left behind because it is tied to the detector.

Thanks Art. Is it a turn on and use item that work's off the Sov's settings or does it require some tuning each time you use it.?

I would hold off on the sunray pinpointer until after youve tried the sov a few times. like art says, it attaches to the detector rod and the gt is a heavy detector to start with so you might not want to go that route.
personally i dont care for them for that reason and when Ive got to use one I use my tinytec. that only offers an inch or so of detection distance, the newer detector pro pisto probe offers a bunch more so have a look at that as well.

It runs off a switch box that switches between the main coil and the probe. No adjustments to the control box are necessary.
Some have said that the meter reading will be a bit off with the probe, but not enough to be any problem. The tone and meter readings should be close enough to identify the target that you picked up with the main coil.

I don't use the S1 either.....for the same reason.......weight.
I use the pocket uniprobe. Very hot, The little bugger picks up a whole lot of things that are so tiny that the Sov can't see them. Takes some getting used to.

Art you mentioned that the uniprobe took some getting used to. What do you mean? Is it so sensitive that you may check the plug and find a small piece of metal and think you found the target and move on? Potentialy leaving a good target. I wrote down all the probes mentioned for checking out at a later date. Thanks again.

The uni is a motion mode PI unit. You have to learn how to move it around and listen at the same time to how it responds to tell how near or far you are to a target and how strong the target is. At first you will be chasing bits of metal so small that they are nearly impossible to find. Once you get used to it you can pretty well tell if the object is about the right size to be a coin or a little piece of junk.

And certainly respect the aforementioned posts..Down and dirty the pricey sunray pinpointer has many advantages over most hand held pinpointers but the bulk and extra weight are negative qualities so I use a handheld myself. Of course over the years have become quite proficient at pinpointing with the unit itself..I would use the unit for a bit until I make any decisions as pinpointing with double D coils can be a problem for many but with practice one can become very proficient...

I bought a hand held one from the company in Texas that makes the green colored detectors. It is way more sensitive than the one I got from the NW detector company. It has twice the depth of the Bullseye. It works great for my detecting.Bill

That's one of the one's I was kinda looking at. Nice to know about these thing's before a guy spends hard earned cash and not be satisfied afterwards. I am leaning towards a good handheld. I have the bullseye and what you just said about the depth help's alot. Thanks.

also have a look on youtube as there are a few videos with these pinpointers being compared. nice to hear them and see them in action.

This topic was discussed also on the 'metal detector' section of the forum.

Some different thoughts there. Jim

Myself I like the SunRay S-1 and feel it will work better for me than anything else. I have the SunRay probes on all my detectors that SunRay makes a probe for and have a UniProbe that is built into the headphone which also a great setup and highly recommend them to anyone that dont want to use a Sun Ray probe. I also just got a Pistol Probe, but i will be selling it as the tones are too high pitched for me and my bad hearing as I cant hear it with my headphones off, so i know when I have them on I would never hear it.It is a good set up I am sure, but being the UniProbe is built into the headphones which too are top quality you can hear the deeper targets so much better and make finding the target so easy. Now with the S-1 it uses the same circuity as the Sovereigns coil does which give you a disc probe so you can get the signal of only the target you are looking for. The UniProbe and others are a all metal probe so it will signal on any metal that is closest to the probe.
