Pinpointer?

I'm having a lot of fun with my X-70 only having it for a week or so. I purchased it used of course since they're no longer making this model and I'm finding my pinpoint button not working as well as the rest of the buttons on the control head. Probably because it's the most used button on the machine. I have to press it down using more pressure and deliberation in order to make it engage.

I'm also finding myself getting up & down a lot after I think I've pinpointed my target and then can't find it. I'm convinced that I need a hand held pinpointer and I'm strongly considering a Vibra-Probe 580.

Any thoughts or suggestions on this?

Bob

I have a DetectorPro Pistol Probe(Pulse Induction--PI) with my X-70(VLF) and I love it, deep(about 5" on a nickle in the air) and works great being hot about 3/4 the way up the shaft for side-scanning piles. The only downfall is the bulky handle and also it will not work with my GP-3000(PI) as the PI interferes with the PI .

I am thinking about getting a Garrett ProPointer(VLF) as a back up for my GP-3000. I have not tried a Vibra-Probe 580.

I've had several VibraProbes (560 and 570) but not the 580. They're good pinpointers. But this last time, I purchased the Garrett ProPointer and have no regrets. It seems to be a bit deeper than my VibraProbes. And there are a couple tricks you can do to make it much deeper yet! Plus, if I happen to be hunting near sundown, the LED helps spot those old silver coins down in the hole. I have to turn it off and on, unlike the vertical automatic switch on the VibraProbe. But then again, it doesn't come on all by itself when riding in the truck. JMHO HH Randy

I have also had several pinpointers. However, since I purchased the Garrett ProPointer I haven't been able to find a reason to get rid of it. I real happy with it.:super:

Randy, I am thinking about buying a ProPointer. Briefly, what tricks do you use to make it much deeper?

Garrett Pro Pointer - Don't Leave Home Without It!

I have the Vibra-Probe 580 and it seems ok. It is my first pin pointer so I can't really compare it to anything but to be honest I think I would prefer one with sound and not just vibration. I also wish the on and off wasn't automatic but it had a switch. It is very sturdy and has stood up to some abuse, so it is built well.

Regards, Tuco.

David, When detecting a single coin that remains buried in a hole, the ProPointer will typically start vibrating when it is a couple inches away from the coin. Larger targets will hit deeper, naturally. What I do is pull the ProPointer out of the ground, hold the blade of my Lesche Digger parallel and against the ProPointer, slowly sliding it toward the tip of the probe. When the blade is about halfway down the probe, it will start vibrating. I slide the blade of the digger back away from the tip of the ProPointer, still holding it tight against it, until it stops vibrating. Now, by holding the blade tight against the probe, it more than doubles the detection depth. I've accomplished the same thing by holding a quarter on the side of the probe. But the digger is always there and much easier to grasp. HH Randy

I have seen this procedure outlined before however, I have never been able to get anymore depth. Don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I just ordered a Garrett Pro-Pointer from New England Detectors. They've got them on special for $100.00 if you use their coupon code of G100.

Thank you Randy, I now fully understand you, and the proceedure, but by holding a metal object against the top of the probe, more than doubling the detection depth, how it works it is still a mystery to me?

[size=large]The metal on the stem trick can be found on you-tube. i have to think by putting a coin near the start of the stem you are re-aligning the field and pushing it down. You do get a little more depth but i wouldn't say double. Watching a comparison on you-tube the gun probe did better on depth but as stated it's much more bulky. One drawback for the garrett probe is when you get closed in on your target everyone around you will know it. it's an all metal mini-detector. no adjustments for sound or anything else and it's loud. It's on or off. But it's a very good probe otherwise. Haven't seen anything better on the you-tube. If it's not there it don't excist. It's fame is growing. And a hundred bucks is the best price i've seen. Beats Kellycos
When my machine tells me the object is with-in 2" of the surface i use the probe to verify. Pull-tabs and foil can't fool this little probe as regards helping me not to dig for a target the machine has been tricked into saying is at one depth and it's really further down. saves me a ton of digging. very good at out-lining targets near the surface.
Bottom line, "Just buy one. You won't regret it".

Control the volume by covering the speaker with your thumb. Reduces the volume by at least 50% I reckon.

That's what I was thinking also. That or place a piece of plastic electrical tape over it. That would keep moisture and dirt out as well. A piece of heat shrink tubing over it may work well also (more permanent).

I just ordered a new Lesche digger off of ebay for $36.65 shipped.

I've been using my wife's garden trowel. All I can say about that is it's not much fun when your tools don't work well.

Like trying to remove a rusty muffler clamp with an adjustable Crescent wrench.

I use the electrical tape, 3M only. Replace when needed. I have had that bad boy pretty muddy and wet. No issues yet, Beale.

I quieten my Garrett down by sliding on a 1" wide cylinder of bike tube.
It also waterproofs the speaker when swinging in the rain
It stays where you put it and slides up or down whichever is needed.
working alongside traffic noise I find I need full volume....other times not
