Pinpointer suggestions

I'm looking to buy a pinpointer sometime after the new year. Im a medical student so I don't have a lot of money right now so I cant afford anything too expensive but I still want something reliable. What do you guys suggest?

harbor freight has one for around $15. does great in wood chip areas and checking the dirt after you've dug the hole.

Hello Azboy, I have a Tiny Tec Delux and a Little Wizzard ll. Tiny Tec was 39 dollars and the Wizzard was 20 dollars. I like both of them but seem to alway grab the Wizzard. Maybe it fits my hand a bit better than the Tiny Tec. Just my 2 cents worth.

Cen tech from harbour frieght, been using one for about 6 mos. Max depth is 1 1/2-2 inches. Also has a light that is handy in the evening when you don't want to quit diggin.

The Little Wizard II actually does a very good job. I used one for a year before I upgraded to Uniprobes. My only complaint with it was that it didn't like the cold. It got 2 inches on coins and you could scan with it flat then turn it on it edge to get exact. I still have it around somewhere. It doesn't work now as good as it used to cause I've filled it full of sand a couple of time

My 1st was the Wizard II to see if I wanted to get into pinpointers or not. For the targets that were just out of visual it did it's job. I thought it was handy at times, so the Wizard II was a worthwhile investment. Then I moved up and the Wizard II was used by others who went along on hunts. I ended up giving it away to a friend and last I knew a month or so ago, it was still working.
Now I mainly use the Pocket Uni-Probe, VibraProbe 560 and Treasure Mate - but they cost much more. But the Wizard II impressed me at time when used.

My Cen-Tech kind of died on my last outing. It was working and then it didn't. Put a new battery in it and no change. Let it sit and warm up some (was about freezing) and now beeps with a high pitched beep that I don't hear with my headset on.

I liked it while it worked (about an inch depth), and haven't decided if I will get another or upgrade. I have seen a lot of good press on the new Garrett pinpointer. The under $20 price is attractive though. Maybe I should dissect it and see if I can guess what changed.

I searched on the net and found that you can buy the cheapo studfinder at harbor freight (mine dont even have a brand name). It basically showed how to open the case, cut loose the sensor (magnet wrapped with laquered wire) and extend the wires to it by soldering 5" to 6" new wire in line, then epoxy it into a the end of a suitable thinwall plastic pipe (the length you choose). Epoxy a cap on the end to seal it, then attach it to fuction as the probe. Works like a charm

Hmmmmm Looks a lot like my standard Tinytec which has been used and used and used. I like the pointed tip of the Tinytec. Bill in Texas :tesoro:
