Pinpointer Falsing.

Pinpointer falsing.....
This has been talked about before now and because I suspect it's a way more prevalent problem than we all realise, it's worth addressing again. I don't think anyone has come up with a definitive answer to pinpointer's falsing that actually is permanent.
BTW....I have a Garret propointer and I've tried the solutions listed resulting only in a temporary fix. I've found that even new or nearly new pinpointer's have this ultra annoying anomaly!

1) Install a new quality 9V battery.....no 99 cent store cheapo batteries!!!
2) Do NOT apply too much pressure on the end of the pinpointer.
3) Turn it off and then on and then 'ground balance' it in soil that is free from targets/metal/foil etc;.
4) Put a little tape or wadding inside the end cap to apply slight pressure on the battery to keep it in contact with the internal contacts.
5) Make sure the shaft of the pinpointer is clean and free from metallic particles that might cause falsing.

My biggest question is why do they false in the first place???? design flaw???? also, is there a pinpointer on the market that DOESN'T false?
Do you do any other methods to stop falsing?
Thanks for your comments in advance!

Not sure if this is the same falsing issue as you, but I do have a problem with the Garrett pro pointer. After a target is removed from the ground, and I recheck the area, I almost always get a weaker signal that indicates another target. Bur after digging to no avail, rechecking with the detector indicates no additional target. It is almost like the pinpointer is picking up some sort of residual "halo" or something. If this is your problem, than, yes, I have the same problem? If not, has anyone else noticed this type of falsing?

Sorry, if this is hijacking your thread

No problem! Yes, targets tend to create a halo effect in the ground over a period of time. My problem is when I take the p.p. away from a target or the ground in general, it keeps falsing/buzzing/beeping like it's still near a target even though you can hold it in the air away from all signals. You can reset it using the fix's on the checklist but it's always a temporary fix like I mentioned.

I have a Makro pointer and it's the only one I ever used. It never falses. On very rare occasions it will signal a target that is really there but when I remove the pointer from the target it will continue to vibrate (I use vibration mode exclusively) even when I point it in the air several feet from the ground. It seems to happen when the sensitivity is set at max (4 out of 4) and very rarely at that. There is a contact terminal inside the battery compartment that can be exposed to dust or debris when waterproof cover is unscrewed and I found that by cleaning the contacts first with a rocket blower and then with a thin coat of deoxit, it has been good for about a year before doing it again.

I've definitely experienced this problem with my Garrett pro and over time I've learned to manage it. It seems like to me that the "beam" that shoots out of the tip of the pinpointer doesn't stay in focus it and gets to wide now the sides of the pinpointer doesn't have that problem. What I've done to help is when I turn the pinpointer on I have the tip about 2" away from the ground, this seems to create the focus that's needed for true readings.

I have a problem with the Garett pro pointer, that when i turn it on the light comes on and it vibrates but it won't sound off when put up against metal, turn it off and back on again and it works fine.

Some questions came up recently about the Garrett Pro-Pointers including the Pro Pointer AT being able to work in salt water. The answer is yes! It just has to be retuned to salt water. Watch the AT video (3:34 minute mark) for advice on how to tune out saltwater or very hot soil:

For older Pro-Pointers or Pro-Pointer II models, here’s an older video we did on how to retune to saltwater:

Thanks for all the comments so far. I'm learning more and I think we are all learning through these collective comments....keep them coming!! thanks again!
