Pinpointer Compatibility

FYI, I recently got a Minelab Profind Pinpointer to test out vs. the Garrett Propointer, and while I like the overall feel of the Garrett better, there is one major advantage to the Minelab.

The Garrett makes my T2 go crazy while it is activated, but the Minelab causes no interference at all.

So for those of you in the market for a new pinpointer, I recommend the Minelab. It also has some nice additional features, such as adjustible gain, silent vibrate mode, and auto turn off with an intermittent beep for 5 minutes to help you find it if you leave it behind.

Just point the coil away from you when you dig and you will have no problem with the Garrett.

Nice to know, I thought it was just me.I could not figure out how to get rid of noise when using the probe.

Hi Neil

After reading your post, I went to the Kellyco website to get a look at the Minelab Profind Pinpointer.

I like the looks and several other aspects of the Profind, but while checking the descriptive data, I had trouble making sense of the highlighted part in their paragraph I pasted below. If it makes sense to you, could you please explain it to me ?

Detector Interference Free technology

The advanced design of the PRO-FIND 25 removes false signals and noise, commonly associated with other pinpointers. DIF technology eliminates interference with an operating metal detector, when it is switched off, by disengaging the coil

That's vague wording. I think they're saying the pinpointer's coil is disconnected from the circuit along with power when it's turned off. Unless it's hardwired and tethered by a cable to the main detector, it can only control its own destiny. ;)

Take your head phone off. That solves the noise problem for me when I'm pinpointing & digging.

I don't own a T2 but I do have the Omega and I've never had a problem with my Garrett causing the machine to go crazy unless I have the coil and pointer next to each other.

That's a major inconvenience for me. I specifically got headphones with a longer cord for so I don't have to remove them. The Garrett interferes with my White's V3i as well, but I just hit the menu button and it puts the detector in "pause" mode.

My pro pointer is fine next to my T2 but my partner's pro pointer makes my machine go crazy. Go figure.

Try changing the frequency on your T2, easy to do and really cuts down on the interference. Hold down on the Menu button while pushing the toggle switch forward. Preset is F4, I go to F1. Hope this helps!

Great suggestion. Even though they are both so similar, I like the feel of the Garrett better. .

The Garrett pinpointer has a fairly good reputation, but for reasons I'm quite sure Charlie didn't anticipate, it doesn't always agree with other metal detectors.

The frequency is "free-running", meaning it varies somewhat from unit to unit. And, the frequency is close to the approx. 13 kHz that the T2 and F75/70 run at.

The interference problem is twofold.

1. A few Garrett pinpointers will crosstalk with the T/F machines when the pinpointer is turned on. Doing a frequency shift on the T/F machine may alleviate this.

2. Many (most?) Garrett pinpointers will cause false signals with the T/F machines even when the pinpointer is turned off. This is because its coil even though small looks like a big target because it's tuned to resonance and when turned off its response isn't regulated by its own circuitry. The solution is usually to put the pinpointer holster behind you to get it farther away from your T/F machine searchcoil.

I know that some of y'all may find it hard to believe that a pinpointer when turned off could be a bigger problem than when turned on, but this in fact is the subject of credible field reports and is substantiated by electrical theory.

Neil, this has come up in the past extensively. As Dave mentioned below, your Propointer and T-2 may only be interacting when the probe is on BUT I'd suggest you test to see if it is also causing problems when the PP is off. You can do this by running your MD in (true) all metal with a stable threshold level and seeing if the threshold sound rises or gets louder as you swing the coil to a closer proximity to wherever you're wearing your PP on your body. Here's a link to posts that have discussed this in the past.
