pinpoint wows

Having just bought an explorer xs I am having problems pinpointing .On my xlt it was just so easy.
I always seem to find the target about 3 to 4 inches to the left of the coil using the explorer pinpoint mode.
I don't know if its me at fault (though i suspect it is) or there a fault with the machine.
is there any way of testing this out or any ways of easy pinponting with this machine ?
On the plus side i have found rings etc deeper than my xlt

For some Pinpointing takes a little time to master. It is different than the XLT. Remember the entire center strip is hot. If X'ing does not work for you, try locating the target then move the coil back to you. When the sound stops it should be right in front of the coil.
It helps on shallow stuff to lift the coil. Another thing that helped me was using a smaller coil like the 8"
Once you master it it you will be right on.

James,
The Explorer signal runs in a straight narrow line from from the front to the back of the coil. If the target is 4 to 6" deep move the coil toward you in a short 1" or less sweep til the signal disapears. The coin will be right in front of the coil.
On the real deep targets center target as best you can. Hold the coil still and rotate it 90 deg and center again. The coin will be in the center of coil or the sweep spot of the coil.

or you could just start digging 3 or 4 inches to the left of where you think it is <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)"> you will get used to it, just take a little time, reset the pinpoint and try it a few times from different directions till it seems to stay in one spot.. I usually use the disc mode for pinpointing...

If possible Jamie, go detecting with someone who owns a Sun Ray X-1 Target Probe. You'll have to have one, they are a must have. Good hunting, David @ Dixie
