pinpoint depth.

Here I go again. I have a Tesoro, a Bounty Hunter, a Whites and my Explorer.
Why is it that all but the Explorer go deeper in the pinpoint or all metal mode and the Explorer is not as deep in the pinpoint mode as it is in the discrimination mode. It gets me mad when I get a good signal in discriminate then get nothing in pinpoint but when I dig the target is there. Chuck

Mine does the same, wondering if it uses more than one frequency in pinpoint?

Maybe that's the reason Chris. I asked the same question about a year ago and no one could answer it then either.

On Tuesday I was at a site that was a little trashy and put on the X8 coil, one of my first signals was a weak high pitched tone. Went to pinpoint and couldnt get it to pinpoint, it almost like it was nulling and nothing there where it showed good in disc as on either side of the target it had a slight signal. I put on my 5 inch coil I was carring (this is nice when you have the X1 probe as you can switch coils in 10-15 seconds) and got a signal in both disc and pinpoint. The reason was there was another metal object (probably iron) on both side of my target and when i went to pinpoint with the 8 inch coil it over powered the pinpoint signal. The edge of the coil was picking up the other signals I feel and canceling out the one I was trying to pinpoint.
I have had several cases where I couldnt get a signal in pinpoint after a good signal in disc and after turning and comming from a differnt direction or picking up the coil higher off the ground before I went to pinpoint than back to the target has got many of them to pinpoint.

Yes, sometimes if I play around I'll
get a pinpoint signal but generally I just find the discrimination mode to be deeper than the pinpoint mode. With my other detectors it is just so obvious that all metal mode is so much deeper.

The Explorer is so much more sensitive it can see the junk targets beside the good target, where the others with the other coil work on a cone shape signal so it dont see the trash beside it, so they will will pinpoint better. Now if you take a clean area I think you will see the Explorer can see deeper than the other do in pinpoint. At least that the way I look at it.
Good Luck Chuck

When the Explorer is in non motion all metal pinpoint mode,is it using a lot of frequencies or just one. If it is , that would probably have an efect on the target type, on how the pinpoint performs. I have experienced the same problem on some deep targets, mainly buttons and small coin sized objects. I havn't read the manual lately so I'm just giving my twopence worth. Any Ideas?????

You could be right about the multiple frequencies Nick. I don't know if it uses all of them in all metal or not. I also wonder if it could have something to do with the DD coil. I do know that for me it's a regular happening. It has nothing to do with being near a junk target. At least not in my case. I've even buried targets in clean ground and I just don't get the depth in pinpoint that I get in smart mode. Oh well I guess that all the other great points about the detector make up for that one fault. I don't even know if you could call it a fault. Let's just call it a characteristic.

and my Shadow X5 is the same. In both units the receive gain (power) is higher in disc than in all metal. I think thats just fine as I hunt in disc. -12 to -16 on the Exp. and low disc on the Shadow X5. When I get a good hit on the X5 and switch to all metal and lose the signal I know I have a deep one. Even though the Exp. has a depth meter the loss of signal when switching to pinpoint tells me the same thing. The X5 with the concentric coil pinpoints great in disc mode and the Exp. stock DD coil isn't bad either once you get used to it.
Good Hunting, ArtWI

Thanks Art. Now I know and as you say it's not bad being able to switch over lose the signal and know you have a deep one. Got to go, got to get out there and start swinging. Love being retired. Get the urge and just go.
