However, one way to know a little more is the first 4 numbers of the serial number give the month and year it was made.

The red button that you are talking about is a stick on that you add to the gold button it helps activate the pinpoint function, and lets you know that it's the pinpoint button. the red sticker comes in with the detector when you buy it new or when you send detector in for upgrade.
