Pin Pointer

New member
New to forum. curious as to quality of differant Pin pointers and the One You prefer.
Thanks,
Chuck

The one the only Garrett Pro-Pointer!! They are very tuff and work great!!

Garrett Pro-Pointer is the way to go.

LoL!
Being new here (And Welcome To The Forum) you've not seen how many times this topic has came up and how they all end!
They always end the same way!
Garrett Pro-Pointer.

The Fisher F-point is a cheap China Dollar store toy,
That makes it the same as the Bounty Hunter pin-pointer,

Then there is that monster that Kelleyco gives away (and sells) with some of the detectors, its a toy as well.

The Bullseye may be a little better, but its a china toss in the box for effect pin-pointer.

The next best one that people actually buy is the newer MineLabs one, its near as good as the Garrett, I think its actually made by Minelabs so its not a China drop in the box free toy.

The Sun-Rays inline gets GREAT reviews, but in these threads the Garrett comes out with the most overall owners. Many like me didn't like the idea of,
The added weight,
Cabled and dedicated to ONE detector and some of us have several detectors.

Hope that helps.

The Garrett Pro-pointer is pretty straight forward.
When you wash it off you use your thumb to cover the speaker hole, (the rest is water proof)
You can de-tune it when you need to by getting it close to what is sounding it off and turning it off, and then turning it back on. When it comes back on what's in the detection field will be tuned out, which means you have to get a little closer to the target before it will sound off.
Caution! Do Not use the probe tip or its shaft to dig or pray with you can damage the pinpointer doing so.

There is no other setting or adjustments with the Garrett.

GARRETT Pro Pointer no other one to buy.............................

Sorry to say guys and gals but I have owned and used both the Garret and the Minlab pointers. When it came time to sell one of them with my older detector I gave up the Garret and have no regrets.

The extra .5 inch or so range with the Minlab makes a huge difference in recovery time and digging effort. The brighter light is nice too.
They both could use improvements in there insides. They have high return rates for falsing or erratic behavior.

And to save even more time the pistol probe is awesome on the deep stuff. But it's ugly, to big and tough to hear and learn. ButI
Won't go anywhere without it now.

Just sayn.

Winter sucks!

Another downside to the Pistol Probe is the grip has a steep slope to it and so your hand tends to slide forward when your using it.

Next is the problem with all that extra depth, if the target is a lone target most times the need for a pin-pointer decreases, but in many areas a lone target is not the normal. With that problem the extended depth and multiple targets your back to the problem that the detector had when you go to all metal to pinpoint, you have to dig ever target in a six to eight inch area to get the target your after.

For me it just makes sense that the pin-pointer's depth range should be somewhere around the 2" range, at lest for my style of hunting.

I agree Mark. The pistilprob can be frustrating to use in really trashy areas because it can be too sensitive.

It was so frustrating to learn I almost sent it back. But then one day I left my propointer at home but had the pistol in the van so I grabed it and said to myself today I will tame this thing or bury it for good.
After a lot of messing with it I set the sensitivity pretty light to where I am picking up a dime at about 2" in my hand. Wow urica!!! it worked great. It worked so well that I now carry both pointers every where.

Here is how they both come in handy. If I get a strong shallow signal I just use the propointer to check the surface quick, if nothing it's probably deeper so I grab the pistol and find it with that, bingo, a much smaller hole or plug to dig. Now a mid dept target I dig a plug and usually find it straight away at 4 to 6 inches with the pro pointer. Anything deeper and now were talken the good stuff that we should not damage. Say I now have a 5" deep plug and no signal yet with the pro pointer, well at this point I know it's more than 7" deep. I grab the pistol and it tells me it's deeper and to witch side of the hole to dig. I dig that general direction till I can pick it up with the propointer and finish the job. In dry ground this can save so much time and effort it's not even funny. In fact on deep stuff it takes me about 1/3 the time it used to. Saves allot on dynamite too. Just kidding NSA I don't really have any, geez

I vote for the Pro Pointer, but maybe would consider the MineLab since its close to the Garrett. I bought a Pistol Probe, took it into work where Mark and I went over it and compared a few pinpointers. Its big, hard to hold onto and not well designed IMHO. Some people swear by the Sun Rays, I had them also and they are great. I wanted at the time a PP I could pass off the the old lady to use while we hunted together, but now we each have our own Pro Pointers and if it dies I'll replace it with the same. :)

From what I am reading I could go with either one the Pro or the Minelab, but for me I wish they would make one without the sound or the hole it comes out of. For me all I need is the vibration, and with head phones on I can't hear it anyway. The speaker also attracts Kidd's like bugs to a light.
