piezo headphones

I have made two pair of the piezo headphones for my excal 11 with the same out come.Wonderful sounding distinct tones in disc, but decreased volume and less tone in pp.I like pp hunting for the extra 1" or so in depth,so I purchased a popular custom made pair of piezo headphones.Same low volume and little tone in pp.I am thinking it must just be my machine since I haven't heard of anyone else stating this.Have any of you noticed a decrease in tone and volume while hunting in pp with the piezo headphones? Thanks

It can be alot of factors......Which Piezo's did you use? And what did you mount them to, plastic, thin, thick? Design and material can make a world of difference. Also did you pull the endcap and take out all of the trash Res/cap, and run it strait to the board. A couple more questions, did you purchase the GGUW's, and how were the stock yellows? Not sure if I can help but I can learn from your answers..joe

Joe is the Ohms different? I know i have a pair of whites headphones that if i put them on my ML SE gives me softer signals they just arent matched to the machine.

Hey OBN, I used the 40mm elements from digikey and the 105's that you referenced in one of your post.I mounted them in the same cup as the original yellow koss.Just trimmed it down and filled it level with rtv silicone over the element. The second time I reused the same koss cup,but this time epoxied a piece of plexiglass over it so there wouldn't be anything touching the element. This gave me the best range of tones.Beautiful in disc.,but lacking volume and tone in pp.I can hear it in pp ,but tone sounds like a single frequency beep with lower volume and no range of tone at all.I haven't hardwired them yet, because I am waiting on the parts for the remote pp switch to come in and do it all at the same time.I do plan to remove the white resistor that you pointed out in another post. Didn't buy gguw. I went with the gm's which also sound good in disc. but lacking in pp. Just wondering if the lacking pp sound was normal with the piezo's or if its just my hearing or machine. All three of the new headphones sound much better in disc. over the koss, but none of them sound as good as the koss in pp.Its got me thinking of not doing the remote switch now and just hunting in disc. since its so good.

You could have a point on the piezo's, I guess the reason I may have not noticed this is, I use Doc's treasure amp on the headphones. I know there is a huge difference when I turn off the amp...and I use the amp only in PP.

Interest on the GM's, they really rock and use they PUI Audio 50mm as I have been using. I just came up with a different design on the setup of the Piezo buzzer...I have two out for testing right now, Mike in VB, and BootyBay in Jersey. The design works on the piezo tube effect allowiing a 360* of audio, and a strait shot to the ear. Does it work better, to close to tell, and I have yet field test one myself. I also found the small the piezo, the louder the target is, but the audio is tinny..like a tin roof..I have just about finished all my testing and moding of all...retiring after 39 years this janurary, starting a new chapter in my life....fulltime water hunter.....

Removing the res, n cap..should help on the PP audio...but maybe not enought, and the only other would be the material which is used to mount the piezo's to...that's why many still say the old blue headphones had the best audio....they were mounted on a thin piece of white plastic then fully siliconed in....

Some thing I have noticed on the piezo's is one side can be louder then the other

Another I have learned on doc's amp is, it will pull up the faints to a loud signal at the beach, where as air testing in a "Totally Silent Room" one can hear these faints, faintly, so the signal is there but with all the outside noise it's impossible to hear at the beach. And this is in the PP/Almetal mode only......

Let me know what you comeup with AU, sounds like your on the right track

I have bought many piezo buzzers trying to find the best, and only a few are close or better then the stockers.....

Thanks for the input.Think I am just going to take out the resistor and hard wire the gm's.If it doesn't improve I'll check into the amp.To do any more I would have to learn something about electronics.
