I was at a local part today and the kids came around asking what I was doing. I explained the machine and gave each a turn to dig what was indicated. Two kids got clad quarters and the third got several pennies and a dime. I noticed that each target was less deep than was indicated. Is that normal?

Also, despite the iron being discriminated out, I dug and dug for a steel bolt of some sort... about 3/8" dia by 3" long. What's up with that?

I also found a network. Well, I think it is a network, in the park, about three inches down ( the machine said 5") I found a piece of cable that looked like coaxial cable. I re-buried it and went on my way. Why would a piece of coax be buried so shallow in a public park?

Regarding batteries, do any of you struggle to get them loaded into your machine? Sometimes it is all I can do to force them in. I am using Harbor Freight 9V and they last about 5 hours with earphones. Is that about right?

5 hrs not long at all copper tops last in my 505 20 hrs plus even in dics modes some heavy iron gets thru dont know why dug some deep holes only to say;';';;';'';;' you know:stars:

Even though you scrimmed out iron, sometimes rusted, oxidized steel will still be detectable, especially if it is big enough. Regarding the coax cable, Depending on what part of the USA you live in, determines how deep some types of cables are buried. Most of todays telecom companies are going fiber optic. This 3in. depth seems way too shallow for any kind of cable to be buried. Most cables have more protection than just a coax sheathing. A squirrel can and usually will dig 3in. or better to find things they have buried. I have found pc's of cable and wire while detecting, the longest was about 2-3 ft. long. Make sure you are using alkaline batteries, 5 hrs. is even close to how long the batteries should last. As teleman2525 wrote 20 hrs plus is a lot closer to reality, especially with headphones as they increase battery life. Hope this helped. Ron :detecting:

Was the coax loose, or was it a long run of it? Some parkes use coax to hook up communications between buildings and such...Always be careful with any wires or pipes you may encounter while digging...

I first thought it was a root because it was about 30" from a tree. I pulled on it and it woudl not budge.

Go figure!
