kinda looks like an eight over a three

But, I believe yours to be a fake... sorry... but silver does not corrode or pit. one of our hunting buddies found one like it here in NYC, and it looked just like yours. It's a bummer, but it happened a lot in those times, especially with the V nicks that would be gold plated and passed as 5 dollar gold pieces...

Could be a fake? Better take it to a honest coin dealer and have them take a look.

The first thing that caught my eye was the corrosion. That doesn't happen with silver coins. In your enlargement of the date, it looks like it's been plated. I've had some old silver coins found in the surf that really took a beating over the years. They're not pretty, but after you clean off the black, it still looks like silver. I've found a couple of dimes near a lake where the soil is always wet. The silver coins were white and the coins were almost "soft" as you could scratch them with your fingernail. However, they still had a white / silver look to them; no corrosion. If you look in the upper right hand corner there's a tinge of green. Copper? If you compare the photos, notice the stars and the profile of Ms. Liberty... To my eye, they just don't appear to match up. Interesting find though :)

Let me clear something up.... The Nickles that were minted without the V on the back, were the ones used to gold plate. It's the reason the V was then included in the gesign so public would know that they were 5 cents and not a 5 dollar coin...

I'm by far no expert so take this with a grain of salt... I think that might be a contemporary forgery. Basically, it looks like it's pretty old ( and a very interesting find none the less ). Could be it's a real nice piece of history. You might want to do a little Googling for contemporary forgeries of capped bust 50c pieces. Actually, reading about contemporary forgeries is pretty interesting.

Thanks Joe G, I'll do that now and thanks for the info.
