'PICKERS'???

INGOLDHILL

New member
I live in the great Pacific Northwest where gold mines abound. I'm wondering if anyone has had success finding small picker gold with a NON-gold metal detector---that is, a medium priced, general use, coin shooter? I don't need to find flakes, but I do like small nuggets. It's time to upgrade my BH OUTLAW DE 280!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for any input....................INGOLDHILL

I am in washington on the east side. near hermiston. I just got an MXT just for that purpose a coin machine that will be good for gold too. I have seen a couple of good deals on the MXT in your general area if you are willing to drive a little to pick one up but i am sure you will get lots of opinions from lots of people about which machine to get. we mine and have had claims in the baker- sumptner area since the 1980's but never detected for gold just dredgeing, panning, and high banking. I park hunt alot and wanted something to do both.

There is a lot in information on the MXT forum about nugget hunting. Some current, but use the search feature and plug in gold nuggets, All dates.

If you are talking about already having a machine you want to use and its range is between 5 to 7 kHz.... likely its not going to be a very affective at RAW gold hunting. MXT is a good choice in that it has a few more uses other than gold and is simple to use with a kHz rating around 14. Not to mention it was designed from a gold machine with excellent GB. Hey but even a blind squirrel will find a nut. If there is gold there you might get lucky IF the nugget is large enough and you know where they will fall. Thats an issue because most people rarely hunt RAW gold with a machine other than a gold machine and they have to be shown where it might hit. It not like coin hunting. Its kind of like relic hunting... it takes some time. Ive had people ask me how do you find those buttons.... its a matter of knowing where they hit, because most dont hint in the range they are used to.

I've tested several of my coin shooter designed detector on small pickers. Several would air test to 2 to 3 inches in all metal and another just plain wouldn't pick it up. I also have and MXT as mentioned above and it does pretty well, 4 to 6 inches on the same samples (in air) as mentioned, in prospecting mode.

The Gold field guys were paying triple the price for them last year and seemed happy doing it..

The XT-705 with a HF (high frequency) coil will hit on small pickers as long as ground conditions aren't too hot, especially the 6" DD HF coil. The 5x10 DD HF coil will go deeper on larger size pickers...
