Pic posting for aol users

I hope this little tutorial will be of use to anyone having trouble posting pictures on web forums. I am writing this specifically for AOL users, so the rest of you might find the following of limited use. I am assuming that you have a digital camera or scanner, and a suitable imaging program capable of saving your pictures to your hard drive or removable drive as a compressed .jpg file.
Step 1:Using your imaging program (I use photoshop 6), open your image and edit/crop as necessary. Size your image so that the longest edge equals 8". Set the image resolution to 72 pixels/inch. Check the file size...you want it under 900k if possible. I apply unsharp mask in photoshop to all my web pictures in the following amounts: Amount:75%, Radius: 2.5 pixels, Threshold:0. Save the image to your drive as a compressed .jpg file (I use a compression ratio of 8 in photoshop)in a folder where you can easily locate it again. Close your imaging program. Open AOL. In the header bar type "my ftp space" (all quotation marks are for clarification...don't type them!). Click "go". The AOL FTP space window opens. Double click on "see my ftp space". The "connected to members.aol.com" window opens. Click on "create directory". Type in the name you want to use for your remote file folder, for example "web pics". Click "continue". The "directory has been created" screen pops up. Click "ok". Close the remote directory name screen. The new folder "web pics" is now listed in your FTP space. Double click on the "web pics" folder name, and the empty folder opens. Click on the "upload" button. Type in the full title of the image you saved earlier, for example "ring.jpg". Make sure the radio button for Binary is ON, and the radio button for ASCII is OFF. Click continue. The upload file window opens. Click select file. The attach directory window opens. In the top menu bar, open the drive in which you stored "ring.jpg", and locate the image file. Click on the "ring.jpg" file, and a preview window opens on the right, and "ring.jpg" appears in the file name bar. Click the send button. AOL now uploads your image from your drive to your FTP space. When the transfer is complete, click OK and close all FTP space windows. Your image file is now stored in your FTP space, ready for posting on the web. To post a picture to this forum, open the "post new message" window, and type in your text. Scroll down to "Optional image URL" and type in the following: http://members.aol.com/your screen name/web pics/ring.jpg
Obviously the screen name, remote folder title, and image title will depend on what you placed on your FTP space, but make sure all forward slashes and spelling are correct! Click "preview message". Your text and your image should come up. If you are satisfied, click on "post image". Done! The image will stay posted until you remove it from your FTP space in AOL. If anyone has any questions about this procedure, feel free to ask... Good luck!
