Pic help

New member
I cut a pic of todays finds down to 200x150 pixels and it is too big, any ideas? Thanks, Jeff

I know this is a dumb question but did you save it as JPEG ETC. Cause if you forgot it would be Bitmap ?

Hi Jeff,

Size your pictures down to 640 x 480 and save it as a small file, you can do this easily with Photo Shop, a lot of the pictures on this site are saved as huge files and use up a lot of download to see them, however if you do what I stated above your pictures will up load and be of high quality and easy to download for the rest of us to see.

All the best......Boony

Thanks Boony, I have posted 1000's of pics at 640x480 but this site wont let me. Jeff

Hi Bob, all pics are jpeg and the forum says no pics bigger than 120 kb. I have posted 1000's of pics. Jeff

Why is it that when I go to paint and downsize a pic and crop it for the forum it is Bitmap and I have to save it as jpeg?
I'm an old fart and only had a computer for 4 years.

Hi again Jeff,

The only thing I can think of is that even if your pictures are saved as 640 x 480 jpegs they still may be large files and need to be saved as small files.
When I resize and save my pics with Photo Shop it asks if I want to save them as "Small, Medium or Large files" the small files are about 50Kb and on this site they are quite OK to look at.

Hope this helps.

Boony

Jeff,

I had a look at the picture you posted and it's 117.35Kbs so I would say that although your sizing them down to 640 x 480 they are still saving as large files, save them as small files and you should be OK.

Regards Boony

Jeff,
I took a look at your pic and it is 230 pixels per inch (resolution) with a physical size of 0.435"w x 0.326"h. Your resolution is over three times what it should be (72ppi). If you notice the size in your post it is more like an inch tall when viewed. That is because the picture is being "sized up" to 72 pixels per inch, ie. pictures will display at 72ppi on the web. 72 pixels per inch is the resolution of computer monitors/displays.

In an inch you have 230 pixels in your file/when viewed at 72 pixels in an inch your "inch" is 3.194 inches.

What is happening is that your pictures are going to be three times as large as you may think, both in KB and actual viewed size.

This is a little confusing I know but bear with me. Your camera probably saves the pics this way in the high quality image setting. I am not sure what program you are editing your pictures in but you should be able to change resolution somewhere. Once you switch to 72ppi your pics should be the size you expect. Or don't change anything but figure three times on the physical size. If your height is one inch at 230ppi it will be three inches when viewed on the web (72ppi).

Boony is correct when he says that you may need to select a higher compression on the jpeg to reduce the file size. But your file sizes are quit different than what he reported. I have 22Kb with a width of 100px by a height of 75px. When compressed in a jpeg format your file will be only about 2Kb as is (way small).

I hope this helps. I work with this stuff every day so if you have more questions I will try to give you an answer.

Take care and HH - Robin

I found the place to reduce the PPI. I am using HP Image zone. I am off to a old home site today and maybe find some goodies to post. Have a good holiday. Jeff

What I do is e-mail a pic to myself Windows will automatically ask you if you want to send the picture smaller or keep it the same size...go smaller and the picture usually arrives in my in box at 40kb..then I save it to the desk top and then post it here from there
