PI pro

Greetings everyone I hit the beach this morning with my new (used) PI pro. I'm still trying to get a handle on this machine and how it works. I've only found small bits of iron so far with it but my question is will I hear a different tone when I stumble across gold or silver. Right now i get a definit pulse sounding tone when I hit the iron and there must be a lot of it in the surf line because the pi just wouldn't stop ,even when it was at waist level. If I walked up the beach one step away from the water I could swing for awile before i hit somemore iron. Anyway any info would be welcome thanks alot... Spencer

Hi Spencer,

I have been using a PI Pro for over a year on the beach and in the surf.

No, you will not hear different sounds. You will get to notice some different variations though, as you get used to the machine. For instance, if you get a signal and dig with your scoop, then the signal seems to have moved, that usually means rusty iron. I have tried and tried to guess what I was going to dig up and have never been right yet.

When you are in the surf, the PI Pro will get lots of false feedback from the waves. When the water level is steady, the unit will be silent. When the water starts to get deeper (wave coming in) you will get a siren type effect. You have probably already noticed that it is not as "hard" a signal as when you get a real target, but it is still very annoying. You can lessen it somewhat by reducing your settings of the "P",s but I wouldn't do that too much, you are probably loosing depth.

While these things may seem negative, wait until you recover a dive watch at 18" that all the other machines have scanned over. The PI can detect targets in the salty sand deeper than you can dig sometimes!

There is a new coil available for the P.I. Pro. It has "ribs" on the top of the coil, toward the front, and to each side. There is NO falsing when the water runs over it!

Spencer like Jackinflorida said the PI only has a single tone.. iron usually is a bigger footprint so I rarely dig iron because of it.. you should be listening for small narrow signals and deep whispers... I use my PI mainly in the water as there is less trash there.. But you can learn what some of the targets might be such as wire or a bobbiepin will have a broken scratchy tone, iron on my PI PRO will sound big like a wow type signal... I don't any extra sounds when working in the surf with my PI so I don't know what Jack is talking about there... I run my gain at 10 o'clock and my threshold at 12 o'clock and the threshold remains very steady... I used to have an extra tone when I ran my detector without a coil cover but when I use the coil cover I get no extra tones... Once you master the PI you will love it.. I love mine and wouldn't use any other type of detector out there water hunting :)

Why don't you make a test garden in your back yard? Minus the water of course, but this way you would be able to hear any slight difference in targets.
