Photo Contest Entry #1

This photo was taken at California State Historic Park- Railtown 1897. This state park is located in Jamestown, CA and is a railroad depot that is still in operation. As you can see from the photo, the photo was taken inside the locomotive repair shop (can't remember the name of the building at the moment), which is the oldest operating one in the US. It houses 3 operational locomotives (the ones you see), as well as one that is currently being repaired and should be operational next summer. You can actually watch the repairs occurring right before your eyes.

Engine #3 is the most famous of all of the locomotives or other pieces of railroad equipment on site because of its many uses in Hollywood films. Anyone every heard of "Unforgiven" starring Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman??? Yup, that was Engine #3 there. What about "Back to the Future #3"? Engine #3 exploded, but it still pushed them back to the future! :) There are a number of other Western films that have featured the Engines at Railtown 1897, but from what I recall Hollywood hasn't come knocking for many years. Still, if they are ever needed again, Hollywood knows where to find them.

Engine #3 currently gives rides on Saturdays down the tracks that it is stationed on, although I have never ridden it.

That's some great history behind those massive machines. Do you live close by? I too have seen the movies. Have they even make any good movies lately?

From what I remember reading they have not made any big budget movies using these locomotives since the late 1990s. I live a few hours away from this park. Thanks for the comment.
