Phantom targets

There have been several instances where I get a good strong signal swinging both ways from different angles/positions but when I dig to the indicated depth, either there is nothing there and the signal vanishes or there is nothing there but the signal remains. What is causing this phenomena? Any suggestions? could it be rust permeated soil?

Thanks,

Mark

im not sure of the true answer but i think your on track with the rust as ive seen this my self when soil was in place so was the old rusted item as we dig it speads out we then lose the signal as for the ones not there im still scratching my head on those:surrender:

Mark next time just kick the ground over the target or just stick your probe or shovel in the ground and go over the signal again. Sometimes by breaking up the signal you can get it to behave and read properly.

I have also seen this stomping technique work too...Just stomp your foot over the area hard a few times (Don't kill yourself), then check the area again...if the signal changes, it is probably trash...If it remains the same, dig it!!

HH,

Sounds like what happened to my 8" coil.

See my post "8" coil acting weird." by drummerman. May 26, 2009

Turned out, my coil went bad. I ended up buy a new coil.
