found this at an old home site from the 1880's about the size of a silver dollar and 1/2 thick at the center it used to have a thin metal wire coming out of the top of it the reverse side it the same
 
Taz, did this get ID'ed somewhere else? I have a feeling you found some source info but the guesses are still coming. lol
