I had the size just a little over what the system would accept, and didn't notice it.

That would be a Bob White Quail.

Assuming the coloring of the picture is as the bird actually looks in real life I would say that is a male.

The young ones are really cool and you can tell them when you look at their wings - feathers have little brown tips.

These are tastey creatures - ever get a chance try them.

They run in a "covey", usually a breeding pair, any young'uns, and maybe some other adults. They prefer to hide when you get near, or, run, then lastly, fly. You can literally walk up to a covey in brush, and they'll take off almost at your feet. If you aren't expecting it, it can be a bit of a shock.

And yes, they are tasty.
