Perhaps and Old Question But From a New TH'er

As I continue to learn about detectingand my GTA 500, I constantly run into new situations that makes me wonder and this forum has been great to address them. Here's another:
When I am exploring the local salt water beach (the only non-frozen part of town) I would get a strong coin reading. To be sure I scan from different angles, then fast and slow. Eventually I get a hit on the ferrous briefly then back to coin again. Whenever I dig these I get a nails or iron of some kind. Should I continue to dig these targets or ignore anything that ever signals iron, however briefly it might? Or could this behavior eventually yield something of value if I stick with it? Am I wasting my time on these signals?

Just yesterday I had the same situation. Belltone one direction and a low tone the other. The I.D. bounced back and forth between the two also. I went ahead and dug the target and pulled out a nail at 1" deep. I checked the hole again and got a solid belltone indicating a dime. Sure enough at about 4" was a 1963 dime.
