performance of the 950 coil on the V3I

The 950 coil on the V3I and it did not work any better than the DD10 coil. I'm still trying to figure how to use this coil on salt water beaches -- any coil. Cannot get the machine to quiet down. Good on dry sand but get near wet or near the water acts like it is under a power line. Tried lowering and raising RF gain, all metal and discrimination. Tried all single frequencies, filters and offsets in salt subtract and different programs. It still operates like you are sitting under high tension lines. Is this machine made to work next to salt water? Great machine on dry land. Should I look for a straight water machine?

Since it doesn't work for you. I guess a water machine is a choice. I use my V3i at S Padre every winter and it runs super quiet for me in the dry sand and in the water. I don't even run the salt program in the dry sand so as not to miss the small gold. I have used both the 9.5 and 12" with the same result.

I have run in the wet salt and No problems at all.... and I use the 10DD coil.
You might give White's a call, you might have a box issue

I bought a used VX3 with the 950 coil and used it for about a year without getting any depth and battling the same noise issues that you are describing. Because this was my first V machine I thought it was more operator error than anything else. I finally sent it back to Whites at the urging of the guys on this forum. They found the coil to be defective and sent me a new one at no charge. It is like I have a completely different machine now. It runs much quieter and deeper. Yesterday I took it to a soccer field and recovered several pennies, dimes and a couple of quarters all at about 6 inches. I hit a very solid and strong 83 at 2.5 inches and dug and found nothing. Usually when this happens it is a pop can located several inches deeper. I kept digging just to be sure and at 12 inches I found a chrome plated threaded nut about 1.25 inches in diameter. If it had been a quarter I think the 950 would have seen it without a problem. I have never used it at the beach so I don't know how it will behave but from what I have read it is supposed to be one of the best. You may want to have yours checked out by Whites.
