Performance of SEF Butterfly vs. Ultimate coil

Anyone have any data on comparing the performance of a 10x12 or 12x15 SEF butterfly coil vs the newer 13" Ultimate coil?

Thanks,
Geoge

George,we had a comparison on a earlier post between these coils. The 10x12 SEF coil has excellent depth and separation,12x15 SEF has good depth not as sensitive on dime size targets and a lot of users complained of the added weight and bulk. The 13 inch Ultimate has excellent depth and separation but in some search areas has EMI problems. As a user I have the 10x12 SEF coil and would rate the coil having a sensitivity and separation edge over the 10 inch Tornado which is a great coil. I haven't used the other two coils 12x15 SEF or the 13 inch Ultimate but with the feed backs on these coils would pick the 10x12 SEF first and the 13 inch Ultimate second.Hope this helps. Thanks Ron

Very rarely does the 10x12 come off my GT. As Ron says, I, also feel the 10x12 has very good separation abilities. If you can find one it would be worth the expense.

Ron pretty much covered it. The "Sovereign And Excalibur Search Coils" sticky at the top of the forum page, has seven pages on coil comparisons and covers these coils. I have the 10x12 SEF hardwired to my Excal, and I'm very happy with it. Dewcon4414 has the Ultimate. I think he likes it but stated it's a little more work using it in the water.

I use the SEF12X10 since it came out on a few different detector,s not only Minelab it is a great coil it finds very small targets deep on beaches and fields , it runs through water very easy no drag i have a Sov shaft made just for that SEF . I tryed a 13 inch and really did not like it . GL Jim

I do like the 13"..... you just cant beat the weight, its lighter than the standard coil. You can really cover some beach and not feel like you put in a hard days work. Its like comparing the Pro Coil to the SEF on the Explorer. Its very sensitive so not quite as stable and can be chatty at the water line. The SEF is just a good stable high quality coil.... but its a little heavy. I also like the foot print of the SEF better. I think there has been a question about the 13" posibly not being water proof..... but i added some teflon tap under the nut and havent had an issue. In the dry sand the 13" is deep and i think louder on shallow tiny targets than the SEF.

Thanks very much to all for the info. I will try to find some previous threads on the subject.

I have two Sovereign GTs and in the process of sorting out several different coils. I think I could do some garden testing.

I understand the EMI issues with the larger coils. I had a 15" WOT coil at one time and experienced that problem.

I know that the smaller Sun Ray coils have also performed well. I think my 8" Intruder is as good if not better than the 10" Tornado, especially in trashy areas.

Best Regards,
George
