Percent of pennies to silver?

Benny

New member
My question is how many pennies will I find before I find one silver coin? I have been detecting for 20 years on and off and have used the best of fisher, garrett and whites (dfx is my main machine now). I live in Canada and just like anywhere else silver is getting hard to find, but is it this hard? I just started getting back into park hunting for silver but have not had any luck in about 15 hours of hunting. I have found at least 50 pennies and a few other clad coins many of the pennies were pre 1940 and several wheaties 1929 being the oldest. So how many pennies and other finds does the average person recover before finding silver??? I have tried several programs but after reading the (Understanding White's DFX book) I settled on a modified relic program using mixed mode that I really like. I guess what I really want to know is other peoples average silver to penny ratio so I can either feel satisfied or step up my game some ha ha.

Well hard to say man, some may never find a silver coins for others like me it took roughly 2 years.

Research those not so obvious sites where some would not like to go to for what ever reason, those places are likely not been hunted.

Also there is no realistic way of telling what ratio there is... Keep digging and you'll find out for yourself.

Location, location, location

If you hunt where the silver is, you will find it. Previously hunted ground has had most of the easy silver removed. Ask for permission to hunt on older private property. If it has not been hunted before, your ratio of silver finds goes WAY up. We hunt peoples yards probably 90% of the time and we will get from 4 to 7 silvers per yard. Some yards, none, some yards.......Eureka!!.

thanks for the reply's, I am kind of surprised at the answers but feel that I'm doing ok with what I'm finding. I thought I would get people saying they would find alot more silver more often. I know the parks I am going to have been heavily hunted.

Sorry, I was reading more into your post than the question you were asking. Looking at my pile of finds for any given month, it looks like I might have a couple hundred cents per 4 to 7 silvers which wheaties may be 20 to 30% of the total cents. What might be misleading is, I don't dig all cent signals especially zincs.

This is a post of April finds posted in the DFX forum, a very good silver month... http://www.findmall.com/read.php?28,715628

As Larry said location is important. Most of the time I'm hunting schools and parks. These are also hunted by everyone else. I cashed in $82.00 a couple of days ago for 2008 and not one silver coin. But that is because of were I am hunting. In these areas zinc pennies can be 6 - 7 inches deep and the shallow silver is gone.

I was talking to guys who did well in a Silver Shoot Out on another forum. All except one guy in Louisiana, they were finding the majority of their coins in old woods, trails and homesteads. They were not making their finds in hard hit parks and many of their coins were 3" deep. One guy had 25, one guy had 35 and one guy had 63 silver coins already this year. The guy in Louisiana found many of his coins in school yards but the schools were old.

Basically in my location old yards would up the ratio of silver to pennies. I just find it hard to ask people to hunt in their yards. In parks I expect to find gold and silver jewelry, and I do. In these locations though my silver coin finds percentage is low, but I expect that. In the parks I still find Wheat pennies but that's probably because they are still in circulation. Rob

O.k. that is more like what I was expecting. So for me hunting in heavily hunted parks I'm doing o.k. but if I want to find the silver I will have to be more creative. It sounds like even a pro in a heavily hunted park might be lucky to find silver. I think I was just worried that I was doing something wrong by finding so many pennies and other things but no silver. thanks again

Yes I might fill in on location that larry mentioned.
My sites that I found silver where all (or most) virgin thus silver was close to surface and easy to locate.
Now at a heavily hit spot everyone (most of us TH'ers) will have problem to find silver.

Now here is when research comes in and is important, some of the most productive sites can be a result of the research you've done.
Silver is rare, else why would it be a precious metal?:detecting:

It seems if you are finding wheaties you should now and then find silver. Except there are some detectors such as the XLT and DFX that can find silver and leave the rest......Jack
