Penny Question for our Brothers of the North [Canadians also a little heads up]

True or not ? Heard that no more will be minted up there. If so are they still being used till they run out? Or did the Goverment buy whats out there back? How is the transition supposed to happen?

On a different subject. I spent about 3 months on our Gulf Coast this past winter. Met many Canadians down for vacation. They come from all over up there Didn't meet one who MD'd. They all could think of good places to hunt back home but claimed never to have seen anyone hunting. Now everyone reading this is a hunter, but it seems to me theres got to be plenty of untouched areas up there. Esp. around boat docks ect.

The penny is no longer being minted, and you longer receive them in your change. Retailers will round up or down. Cheques, banking and such still show balances in 1 cent increments, but if you withdraw from your bank you need to round to the nearest nickel. Pennies are still currency, but once they get to the bank they are sent away for destruction.
There are plenty of Canadians who metal detect, especially in our lakes and water bodies. The most popular lakes are hunted almost daily. Although you can still find some silver, most of the obvious good sites have been hammered to death. That being said, with a little leg work and some persistance, you can still put some decent finds in your pouch.

Thanks Craig, For the Penny info. Finding a good pocket spill down here is getting harder too. Just got to bear down, keeping looking, & sweep slower.

The government is taking them in and likely melting them.
There was a rush to buy on the last minting hoarding likely by collectors.
I heard that they may just mint limited quantities for collectors
Likely will still find and dig them for a while.
