Penny Problem

Captain Hook

New member
My basic VDI numbers for clad coins is 13/15 for nickles, 33/34 for pennies, 37 for dimes, and 38 for quarters. However, many pennies are now coming up with a reading of 37. Is there a way to separate a penny signal from the dime signal? I have a MXT as my back up detector. The MXT has one screen that will read a numerical value and say zinc penny. Then another screen comes up sometimes that reads penny or dime. However, if the numerical value is a 77, it's 100% a dime. Has anyone found a way to separate pennies from dimes on the Safari? I participate in a weekly family hunt where coins have point values. I need to focus on the silver coins and leave the pennies alone. Thanks to all.

hello cap. I dont have the answer for u but i also have the same problem but it's with my quattro. now the weird thing about my pennys coming up on 37 value is that it only happens in dirt but not in the wet or dry sand. also if i remember correctly (99.9%) sure that when the quattro was new ( bout 2 years) it showed a value of 34 on pennys no matter what type of ground thats why i have never mentioned it. it's a pretty recent crazy thing. I believe the safari is pretty much a faster quattro. my question is, can a machine lose it's adjustment that was set at the factory, or can it be re tuned ? any of u techies out there know if my machine is losing it's mind.... or is it me losing mine.?

thank u all ahead off time. diggitdawg

the copper pennys usually always read the same as a dime on every machine i have ever used.

I was just wondering why pennies had a VDI of 33-34 when I first got my Safari. Now most of them read 37? That was the point I was trying to make.

Has anyone contacted Minelab ? My safari also does the same thing. I scrimmed out all numbers except 38 to look for a stirling silver earring that someone lost at a graduation party in my yard. I ended up finding 2 pennies, I find this very strange, I bought my machine from Kellco in Feb. of this year. Ron

I hope I am not repeating what someone else may have suggested that the problem might be.......

There are two things that come to mind with my experience with the Safari

1) If the Trash setting has been changed from FAST to SLOW or vice-versa, this possibly could change the coin IDs that you have been accustomed to.

also -

2) I know I am guilty on this one , I find and also read that IF you do not NOISE CANCEL when you start tecting it MIGHT cause a slight shift in target ID. It may be that in the beginning, when you first got the Safari, you followed all the suggested tips, but as time went on, like many of us do, we simply turn it on and GO !

Give these a try and see if there is any change in what you are experiencing.

Thanks for the input. However, since day one I have never changed the trash setting. Also, the first thing I do when I take my detector out of the car is noise cancel.

Well, I suspect my Safari is on the blink, but it does the same thing on pennies. They come in as 37 just like a dime. But I find the dime has a "twitter" tone that the pennies often lack. Not always but often. Clad dimes or silver dimes sound the same on mine. I am vexed with twist off wine bottle caps. They all come in at 37 or 38 and show coin as if they were quarters. I noise cancel at first and every time I change any setting or even if I cross a road to a similar type soil. I manually set my sensitivity to about 16 because auto always seems to be 20 which causes too much noise. I hate digging those wine bottle caps but every so often it is a quarter so I have to. There must be lots of winos around here! Another thing I have found is that on low trash density it will take about 30 seconds to reset between multiple targets. Quick response times over the Quattro was one of it's selling points, but not so on mine. So I have to keep it in high trash density to keep from falling asleep between targets. Well, not quite that bad but you get the idea. As an experiment I went to an area that I know is saturated with pennies 'cause I got so tired of digging them I discriminated them out on another brand of detector. Anyway, I found three pennies with the Safari. I went back with a cheap SilverUmax over the same small area and found 4 that the Safari had missed! Something has got to be amiss. Onus

copper pennys on cz-5 come in the same as dimes and quarters. doesn't the cz3d have the same meter range.

We hunt together, he was just kidding me about his CZ3d.

have had the safari for acouple months now always read 33,34 on pennys too, last 3 days 37,havent changed anything i believe strongly its a glitch in the safari, even wheaties are 37 when they use to come up31.

I asked the same problem here: http://www.findmall.com/read.php?3,1058335 I have not changed anything and even did a factory reset.

I understand the copper pennies ringing up as dimes but not the zinc ones.
