Penny/dime MXT reading

New member
While out for a bit this morning, after retrieving several pennies and then a dime, I decided to see if I could pin down whether the MXT (or the operator) could read a penny versus a dime, more accurately. Well the ID numbers are very close, but on my machine when they wobble from 77 to 79 it's most likely a penny. From 79 to 81 the odds it is a dime are pretty good. This was using the 4X6 shooter coil. As this was a very limited sample, I'm throwing this out to any of you that are interested enough to keep track for a few hunts to see if there is any consistency in it, then report back on the forum.

Totally noticed exact same today..dime just a hair more...using 8x6...got tired of digging pennies so kept tabs on dime readings...Curt

So true! And then there's those darn zinc cents that ring up in the upper 50's to lower 60's. :veryangry: I won't dig those things and I'm sure I've missed out on some unique finds, but I don't care. Shame on me. HH, Nancy

I've noticed the same pattern with the 6x10 Bill. The one exception that I've noticed is that sometimes a dime will "move down" on the VDI a couple numbers into the penny range. A penny doesn't seem to do the opposite i.e. "move up" on the VDI to dime range. Thanks for poting your personal observations and confirming what I was thinking.

Thanks for the input, folks.

The mass of your target affects the VDI as does the conductivity. A penny can not gain mass, but a dime can lose mass by wear. The old expression, one thin dime applies here and a worn silver dime can read as low as +60's, even a modern dime with some wear will read the same as a penny. When I'm not in the mood to dig pennies but willing to dig dimes, I can sometimes tell by the VDI wants to "wonder" a little on the pennies and most dimes, especially shallow ones, tend to lock on to one VDI, at least in our ground.
