Penny day

Ken (Australia)

New member
:jump::ausflag:Spent a couple of hours at one of my local primary schools the other afternoon. No silver, a couple of dollars in small change and some pennies and halfpennies, the oldest an English 1877. I wasn't disappointed. I love finding pre decimal coins no matter what they are and it's good practice. I was talking to a chap from one of our local government departments yesterday about detecting and he gave me a map with about 10 old schools sites he had marked on it and said go and have a look, you bet......Thanks for looking...Ken.

the pendant realy intrigues me! I've never seen one like it! Is it silver? Does it have a date? It looks like it has a heart in the centre with a cross above it, and halo effect around the cross. But what's that symbol across the heart? And what does it all stand for, or mean? Sorry Ken, couldn't help all the questions. But that's a hell of a relic!
Angela:)

When I was a surfer, (a few years back):|,we used to wear something calld a St. Christopher medal. It basicly was a religious pendant, that almost always had a cross on it, but I don't know if that's even close to this piece. Just thought I'd throw that int there, but your pendant is very interesting and intriguing.

Sorry, don't know what it all stands for, the inscriptions are in latin. Beachguy your right, it's a religious medal. Seems to be made out of some type of light alloy. Here's a couple more, the oval ones came from an 1850's farm site..............Ken.

Very interesting medals Ken! The family was obviously religious. The first medal there, the picture on it, is very common in ceramics, that type of statue, I mean. Being latin, could be Roman Catholic. But the alloy is interesting too. In those days they used to make a mixture of different types of alloys, so sometimes it hard to tell what a relic is made of, especially when it's discoloured.:)

You know Ken, I've never been a "super" history student, but this stuff almost drives you in to it. I mean, how can we not be curious about the stuff we find, especiallY if it's like your piece there. To me that's starting to be half the excitement of it is, where did it come from and how did it get there and what's the story behind this find??? I thought that St. Christopher was the saint of travel, but I'm not sure about that, but you could probably get some info off the internet, either way. At any rate, that's great stuff, and still very interesting. You and Golden are getting me much more interested in something besides just coins and pull tabs. That's for sure.:| I hope to expand my horizons here.

Hello Ken. You are going well with those old coins and relics. You must be doing a little bit of research to find these old spots. Keep up the good work and all the best. Stan.

I had to retire a bit early and have plenty of time up my sleeve, so do a fair bit of research. At the moment I have three books on local history from the library which I'm reading. All speak of local races, shows etc from the 1840's to the present and give some locations. Many have now been built on but I've got a couple which are now sporting fields that I'm going to look at. The internet is also a good source of maps and information. Geoff and I have a picnic racecourse lined up for one day next week. It's about 100 klms from my home, was going in the 1800's, is still in use and I've been told never detected. Hopefully there's some old coins amongst the trash. All the best......Ken.
