Pennies

Hopefully someone can help here please.

On our local radio Station there was a discussion about dates on some Australia Pennies that had been found.

They were dated 1966. 1965. 1963. now someone with knowledge of coins said that there never was 1966 pennies produced. And the lady said she was holding a 1966 penny in her hand. The lady was trying to find out what the value of the coins were as the currency changed in 1966.The problem wasn't resolved even though the compere tried to find out on the net so i thought i would ask in here.

Can anyone help please,regards Maureen.

Production was stopped in 1964 of then decimal system like British, was restarted in 1966 under new standard with young Queen Elizabeth on front and big eyed marcpial on back, above link shows it. Don

The Australian Penny was a coin used in the Commonwealth of Australia prior to decimalization.

The coin was first introduced in 1911 and stopped being minted in 1964.

When "decimal-ization" happened on 14 February 1966, the coin value was equal to 0.8333

Hi guys it seems that the penny was actually produced but not circulated because of the currency change. Now this lady had a 1966 penny in her hand as she was on the radio telling everyone what she was looking at in her hand "no mistake" .She actually found a whole bunch of these pennies buried in the ground. Now to me this spells theft direct from the mint so i am wondering if the pennies could have some value??.

Regards Maureen..
