Pennies

A thought came to me today as I was dumping a roll of pennies in the cash drawer at work today. I wondered just how many of these pennies were zink and how many were copper. Out of the fifty only one was a copper. The rest were zink. Maybe the time is coming to consider copper pennies as non-clad. I sure respect them a hell of a lot more when I dig one up then a rotton new crumbling zink penny.

Yeah our money has been pure junk for decades. I fully expect them to go to plastic one of these days. Oh how I miss the days of silver, copper, and silver certificates ( the old paper money ).

When I lived and worked in Vegas during the late fifties and early sixties the front of all my pants had a worn spot right across the bottom of the pocket from carrying a pocketful of silver dollars all the time. That was the coin of the realm then in Vegas. Anytime you broke a bill to buy something you got silver dollars in change. Sure wished I had saved a ton of them but who knew they would take away our right to own real money.

That thought has passed through my head many times too. That's one of the reasons I buy a gold coin with those cheap Zinkers every year. Below is the gold coin I bought in 2005 with my pennies.

On the 1350 I can most the time tell a Zinc from a copper. A zinc will read 7 and a copper will read 7.5 to 8 same as a dime.

Yeah I've got to get the tons of pennies I have all cleaned up and turned in and buy some kind of coin. So far with the 250 I have accumulated almost 500 quarters. That would buy a nice gold coin.

man uncle willy when i read about what you find with the 250 ,all kinds of thoughts run through my mind, i read a book from the library today about beginning MD coin & treasure hunting by Dorthy Frances got the whole thing cover to cover in 40 min,, funny thing was everything i read i already learned on this site from you both johns ralph and everybody ealse , ive read so much i feel im a little better than a newbie and i havent even touched my 250 yet

You better quit reading and get out there and find those goodies. That 250 is probably straining at the bit. :)

Yesterday I went to my local dealer to brag about my finds for the month with my 250 and my 1350. I told him my 250 does everything but dig the coins for me. He jokingly said "GARRETT is probably working on that now."
I hope not, I want to do something to earn all great finds.
Have a great day, everyone.
Your Friend.

Brother John,

Nice gold coin. I may be lucky just to be able to buy a silver coin at some point.
