Pennies

Why do the pre 1982 penny numbers jump around on the screen from 21 to 28? I can usually hunt with a sensitivity around 24. I thought that might be the problem but even when I change the sensitivity down the numbers still jump. The other coin readings are fairly stable. It seems only the penny numbers vary so much.

1959 to 82 pennies composition is .950 copper, .050 tin and zinc where as after that its copper-plated zinc.... .992 zinc, .008 copper, with a plating of pure copper, total content .975 zinc, .025 copper.

My Cu pennies USUALLY come in tighter than that; typically 23-26. Older V Nickels, Buffalo and Jefferson nickels are solid 12-13, Clad dimes 25-27, Silver dimes 26-28, Clad quarters 30-31, Silver half 34-35. I've been skunked on silver quarters, silver nickels and silver dollars so far.

I have turned up some older wheaties that dropped into the low 20's. Last week I found a 1910-S in the dust on the surface that was 20. That isn't typical though. My zincolns are typically 19-21. A badly corroded example can be lower than that by a couple digits; 17-18.

Currently, I am running v1.75 on my EQ800, usually in Park 1 or 2. I've bounced back and forth a couple times between v1.5 and v1.75 just to see if I can discern a difference. I mostly use the 11" coil, occasionally the 6".

I hunt salt water beaches and pennies can come in at 7 or 8 up to 27 so far. You pretty much have to learn to listen to your targets and dig everything that sounds good. That TID will drive you nuts!!!

Hey what are your Indians heads hitting at? Just wondering.

Zincs are all over the place especially when corroded

Small copper seems to really be a sweet spot for the Equinox and my Indian head cent finds
have been unusually high compared to both my CTX and E-Trac.
I have had some wild penny IDs, especially if they are on edge.

My Indians mostly come in at 19-21 but have seen them flash anywhere from 17 to high 20s.
They all sound really nice in 50 tones clear to maximum depth so the dig decisions are easy.

I'm really wondering why I found such a preponderance of pennies today vs other coins (beach).
Such good sand movement but just pennies. Is there some ritual where people go to the beach and toss pennies in the sand?
Really annoying the penny ID range on the Equinox seems to have changed from 20-21 to 18-27.

Bryan V -- I agree with you. My Equinox LOVES Indian Head pennies for some reason, and the VDI numbers you tossed out are exactly what I experience. I have found more Indians this year, with the Equinox, than I would generally find over 3-4 years with my CTX, or, in prior years, my Explorer. Don't know why that is, for sure, but the EQX seems to really like them.
