Pennies from Heaven

What a day at the park! This is my 5th time out with my new E-Trac and I came home with a record 142 coins in 4-hours. Last weekend, in roughly the same amount of time, my number of coins found was 61, including 17 dimes. But today's finds included 127 pennies, with 2 wheaties, the oldest being 1944. I recovered 2 coin spills, with one-hole containing over 20 pennies.

The park has a very high trash density, and using my stock 11" coil, until my 6" Excelerator coil arrives (hopefully this week). This has kept me to deep = off; fast recovery = on; and trash density = high. I'm using the Minelab coins program, while experimenting with sensitivity. Now that I've cleared a good number of surface coins and trash, I'm going to experiment with less discrimination; fast recovery = off; trash density = low; and higher sensitivity next week in the same patch to see if I can find some deeper coins.

Happy Hunting

Alex(or anyone who wants to answer), I have a X-Terra 70 but not an E-Trac but I would like to own one.

1) Can you make a pattern or read the 2 number system so you can knock out(eliminate) new pennies and only dig the old pennies with your E-Trac??

2) With the best discrimination system available on the market do you find you are either still digging alot of trash with the E-Trac, cut down alot, or a minimal amount?? As compared to a regular (TDI, single number discrimination screen) single frequency VLF machine??

Thank you!

Hi David,
Happy to answer your questions:
1) Yes - I believe you can knock out the zinc pennies and dig the old ones. While I've only hunted one park, I have found that the conductivity of the zinc penny signature has been 36-37 consistently. Older pennies (US memorial bronze & wheat) target from 40-44. Frankly I've been contemplating just that because I'm spending an excessive amount of time digging zincs.

2. I am definitely digging less trash compared to my other brand of detector, and I attribute that to the multi-tone audio feature of the e-Trac. In general, when hunting for coins, the higher the tone the more likely its going to be a good target. That said, I'm still digging more screw caps and crown caps than I would like, but I've seen a reduction thanks to repeatability of their Ferrous/Conductivity signatures. I suspect I'll be digging even less trash after my Excelerator coil arrives which has been on back order for 3-weeks - argh.

Alex,

Watch out in Indian country......they will hit in there at 32-36 conductive, depending on the corrosion/depth on them. Make sure your watching the depth meter, and not tuning them out just based on sound alone!!!!
