Pawn shop Bounty Hunter Discovery 3300 What would you do?

Hi all, I am new to MDing. Still shopping for my first detector. I've been doing a lot of on line research before buying. I was planing on spending about $250 on a used unit. As I educated myself, I decided I wanted something with numeric ID, something like the Fisher F2 or Teknetics Delta . On a whim, I called a few pawn shops in my area. One of them has a Discovery 3300 for $95. When I looked it up, I saw that it had every feature I am looking for.

To put it simply, what would you do?

The 3300 for 95.00 even from a pawn shop is a good deal.I would make sure it works,Most of these places know very little about metal detectors. If it works you have a decent detector for a cheap price. Good Luck Ron

Even though the 3300 is a very nice feature laden detector for the money, (yes, I've had several) I would still hold out for a new Tek Delta, or if manual GB is a requirement for your needs, look for a nice used Tek Gamma. You do get what you pay for and many times a buyer will experience regret when appeasing their short term feelings (want to find something "cheap") instead of their more long term needs.

You could buy it for $95 and use it to find enough money to upgrade while you get a taste of detecting and see if you are gonna stick with it. I am also a Tek fan and like the Greek series from Tek. They are hard to beat for the money.

I also think you could get your money back and more if you decided to sell the Bounty Hunter later. I used a F4 for awhile and it is a good detector. It is closely related to the 3300 and will find stuff to a decent depth. The ID is pretty accurate, it can tell the difference between a memorial penney and a dime. I was able to call the coin before I dug it.

That IS a good deal. Bring some bateries to check it out. At least make sure it works.
Do it soon because right now Metal Detectors in pawn shops are going fast!
If I saw it in the pawn shops here I'd snap it up.

It's according how much you will be detecting and how challenging your conditions are.
I have a 3300 and while it does good on clad hunts and such, it has a slow recovery.
Having said that, I found a lot of clad and several gold and silver rings with mine but
I don't use it much because it doesn't do too well under adverse conditions.

Check it out to make sure it works and if it does, buy it. I bought three of the 3300's when Radio Shack put them on sale in local stores back in 2006. The build quality isn't as good as the higher end models, and as Steve mentioned they have a slow recovery speed, but no complaints about how they performed. Someone mentioned ground balance, the 3300 has the option of using preset or a manual ground balance that affects both all metal and discs modes, but setting the manual ground balance can be a little touchy as it's only about a 3/4 turn pot. The meters on the three I had were dead accurate on dimes and older pennies to 6 inches or so and quarters an inch or so deeper, past that the numbers jumped around but the audio tones were accurate a couple of inches deeper. The 3300's are lightweight, easy to use, have good performance (especially for $95) and darn good for someones first detector. Link is to what I said about the first one I bought, updated after each of the first few hunts. The last paragraph doesn't necessarily apply to the detectors First Texas currently markets.

Thanks everyone for your help. I bought the Discovery today. Did a little wheeling and dealing. I got it for $90 including tax. Now, to start learning how to use it.

kydigger, The bounty hunter for 95 bucks if it works ok would be a great detector to start with. That's the brand a lot of us started with. Then move on to whites or mine lab or what ever. Then you would have a detector for Friends & family to use. That always means more spots to hunt. I found cw relics & some old coins with my BH here in Kentucky. Joe
